Hi!

It just arrived, bought on ebay for 265$ 20 days ago,

They are sending it from malaysia, and they say that its just outlet, and new and original.

First when I opened it I saw everything scratched (crossover and aesthetics), and

in one of crossovers there is that red thing scratched, and without isolation on some places

and its not tied as on other one, and not glued.. so it sux!

What do you think, is it real or is possible that its fake?

you can find more of them in search on ebay, just write hertz mlk165.

I just saw a post and pics on another forum about fake Focals bought from an ebay seller in the same country. Could be... but the Focal fakes were so good, I would never have known unless I was looking for it. That's the only thing that tipped me off... why would you buy a speaker that is distributed here from another country? Don't do that. People will do anything to save $20 it seems.

Hi

I just purchased a set of MLK165 from US ebay seller but I am 100% convinced they are fakes. I suspect these are the same speakers that are being sold in Malaysia/Singapore for US$200-250 by sellers that do not list their location. The first time I inspected the speakers I did not notice anything unusual. It was only upon much closer inspection that I found many anomalies.

The speakers cost US$600 and shipping was US$118 to Australia. The seller has 100% feedback after selling nearly 100 items and seemed to know alot about high-end car audio judging by his responses.

At first glance I was convinced the manual was 100% authentic. The print, finish and material seemed like the real deal. Upon closer inspection you start to see mistakes - the blocks of silver ink on each page had little specks missing here and there, there was a black blob on the seperate Italian printed sheet right next to some text at the bottom of the page. There was also no warranty card. The documentation was in ziplock bags.

I have also emailed Hertz about the issue and am waiting on a response.

Here are the flaws I noticed with the speakers:

Woofer:

1) The four 'HERTZ' stamps on the woofer 'gaskets' have irregularities in their lettering (compare E and T in first two pics, this alone is enough to confirm they are fakes):

2) The 'gasket' has imperfections in the finish - rough edges, scratches, and bits of black paint:

In some areas the glue that holds the 'surround' onto the 'gasket' has overflowed onto the gasket:

3) The drivers have excessive glue applied in several areas which has flowed onto black perforated grill beneath the "spider" (both speakers):

4) The speaker terminal is tilted on one of the woofers!

5) The red dot on the positive terminals of the connectors has been sloppily applied (not sure if the genuine speakers use a similar method):

Tweeter:

6) On one of the tweeters the black paint on part of the 'H' character has come off. Also the cage was loose and came off easily:

Crossovers:

7) On the crossovers the ML CX20 logos are slightly crooked:

http://www.users.on.net/~wren26/15.jpg

8) The silver paint on the outside of the crossover box looks cheap and is not durable (looks like spraypaint) and has been scratched off in several places despite being wrapped in plastic and protected by foam housing:

9) The electrical parts inside the crossover box (light grey components) look cheap and may not be genuine. Many components look fake, the finish is substandard and the lettering printed on some of the pale grey cylindrical components is very faint:

The "2R7J" component has paint missing on the right hand side.

And on the other crossover:

10) The plastic housing on the right-hand side of both crossover boxes has dents and chips:

11) Lines of glue on the coiled orange component in the crossover (both crossovers):

Will do. But I have a feeling the counterfeiters got hold of some genuine serial numbers and just duplicated those. Wouldn't be too hard right?

So, after receiving 3 emails from 3 different people about these, one referencing this thread, I joined this forum so I could reply to all of you at once.

I have bought 2 sets of MLK 165's now, both from different vendors, both on Ebay. A part of the reason I bought them was in fact to check them out. I have had many different sets of high end components and my friend that works at an Audison/Hertz retailer was raving about the MLK's so I figured I'd try them out. When he told me the best price he could do I immediately looked on ebay and was like "beat that price", he couldn't as it was below cost so I went with the Ebay MLK's without fear as ebay/paypal's buyer protection is so biased to the buyer now as to remove all risk.

When you guys started emailing me about my experiences with these, I re-checked them all out (which was easy to do as they are all still sitting on my desk. I blew 2 woofers and haven't installed the new ones yet). They are all legit when compared to known real ones at the store and in addition, I think you guys should reconsider your scrutiny of details like sticker placement and general construction sloppiness.

If you havent had much experience with hand built italian items, you may have unrealistic expectations for them due to the mechanized precision of lower end gear you may have been used to. The first time I worked on a ferrari I was appalled at the inconsistencies in the manufacturing: inconsistencies that come from the items being assembled by humans and not machines. If you look at several sets of identical 100% genuine Hertz speakers at a retailer (which would never happen as no one stocks 2 sets of anything hertz makes due to limited demand) you would see that some are sloppy with the glue on the surrounds, some are perfect, some are sloppy with the paint etc.

If you considered Occam's razor in this situation, what is more likely, that Noms received a set of MLK's that Ambrosio did a ****** job on and Pavarato pushed through QC late on a friday to get home early, or that some people took the time and money to tool up machines and gather identical materials to build a doppelganger of a limited production run speaker for an incredibly small niche market? There simply isn't enough money in it for someone to make a clone of hertz speakers. It is barely worth it for Hertz to make them! In addition, even if they were "fakes" how different are they from the real thing? Can you hear a difference? Are your speakers really even the weakest link in your stereo?

this is all aside any actual review of the MLK's which should be looked at before even getting into this fake/real issue.

Firstly, if you are going for perfection (as it seems you guys are) and you get a set of MLK 165's, dont fuss over the legitimacy of the crossovers, just sell them. If you want to, throw a signal generator and a scope on them to see where they are crossed for future reference before you get rid of them. Next Biamp them on separate channels and do your crossover points in the amp if you dont have something like a rockford threesixty2 or a Audison Bit one. With the vastly varied environments of car interiors, your money is best spent on signal processing to correct for the different efficiencies of frequency production per power output and not even on speakers anyway.

If you goal is to impress your friends with what speakers you bought, buy whatever impresses your friends. If you want your car to sound good and have a budget, I would get a Bit one before anything else. power is so cheap now that your money is wasted on amplifiers (unless you already have the other pieces to the puzzle and are buying a class A/B or better amp) and the major advancements that have taken place in the car audio world are in signal processing, not speaker design. The MLK 165's are great speakers, but they aren't THAT much better than something you could get for much less money so stop worrying if they are fake, stop taking pictures of them, screw them in your doors, go buy a Bit one and listen to music.

If any of you are ever in the Philadelphia area, you can come listen to my ebay MLK's through my Audison LRX 14.1k and bit one and let me know what you think; its the best thing I ever heard in a street car.
