Here's a tough one...crankshaft position sensor..why?

if the code came up before it will come up again...especially for a crank position sensor and your spark plugs are loose that either means 1 of 3 things....someone loosened them up and didnt tighten back down.....the compression is becoming too high cuz the timing is slightly off....or its time to replace worn plugs....

this is good. but if it comes up again, it's probably time to get dirty.
Any chance that it coming on in the first place was just a fluke somewhere?? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wow.gif.23d729408e9177caa2a0ed6a2ba6588e.gif

Yeah, if it does come on again I'll know what I gotta do. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

The plugs have about 50k on them, the timing hasn't been messed with (doing the timing belt soon), and nobody has touched them but me.

Do any of the above relate to the crank position sensor, in terms of why the check engine light came on??

no.

and i've never heard of timing backing out plugs either. i wouldn't think compression could do that. but anything is possible i guess.

and 50k on plugs? which plugs you have?

the crank position sensor is to help the engine time itself....(within reason i mean its not gonna completely time itself for you) how long has the timing belt been on there....it could have slipped a tooth(or more) and caused a timing retard or advance...

If it slipped a tooth I'd be having all sorts of problems, I can't imagine that happened.

sorry to get off topic but we kinda have the same problem for my dads 96 intrepid....he had the check engine light for about 2 years straight(since then the light its still on)..we bought new sensors...problem didnt get fixed...bought new tranmission computer...it worked but for 1 year then the same problem came back..and we took it to the dealer..they couldnt find the problem..took it to autozone to get the codes...it appeared it needed new sensors(even though we already replaced them like 2 times)..sucks!!...the car runs great but only when the car gets warmed after driving it for more than 20 mins thats when it starts to run bad...it breaks it self hard everytime you stop at a stop light..it stays in 1st or 2nd gear...we dont know what the problem might be anymore...

I highlighted the problem in your post.
