I am in Costa Mesa, CA. I have two mtx terminator 12" subs Paired with a rockville 2000 watt max amp. I had them installed at a place in town and they were fine, but when I turned my bass dial up the day of install it seemed like the bass never stopped even when there wasn't frequencies causing bass. I turned the gain down and it seemed to help. Over the next week I slowly turned the dial up as they broke in, eventually today I was able to turn it all the way up with a good result. I got home turned the car off. When I turned it back on it sounded different I can't place my finger on what exactly it is and I have little knowledge or ability to troubleshoot. If there is anybody in the area that could help me troubleshoot as I am worried I may have blown one or both subs, but don't want to spend the money to replace if it's something trivial. I also don't want to **** with it when I don't know what I'm doing and potentially do damage that may not be there.

Could be blown subs due to cranking the bass control up. Those bass controls can clip the bleep out of the amp and send ~8x power to the subs. Hope you didn't damage any equipment.
I am more inclined to blame the amplifier. From the get go there was playback issues. I once had an amplifier that would turn on and play a loud bass hum when I would shut driver's door a bit too hard. This was with the system turned off, no key in the ignition. Since your amp played a random bass note, I would say replace/return that amp. No need to try and salvage it if you just purchased it.

He said it was fine until he turned the bass knob up and then he got the hum.

I sure hope not. Much more of a hassle changing out subs. If that were the case, would the subs have made the change in sound before turning off the system?
He also said he turned the gain up
I have used low RCA input and high amplifier gain before without issues, but it will sometimes cause noise as described by OP.

the system deff. has been tampered with and more than likely the warranty if any will not be excepted by the audio shop more than likely. It would be worth taking the time and have the subs tested with a DMM to see if they are blown. You could have a shop test them individually due to the lack of experience. There may be a possibility of only one sub needing to be replaced rather than a pair.?
