dont know about lcd's lasting thousands of hours. i had my 15" lcd screen on almost everyday for a few years. no problems untill i cracked the screen trying to pull it out of the closet (my fault).

sears has a 42" lcd magnavox on sale for $799. regular its 1399 , iirc. i got my LG from brandsmart. dont think they have any outside the state though. they had a 36" sylvania for ~600. i

so then what is the best overall "type" of tv? plasma, lcd, rear projection, etc? I just want a tv that will last longer then 2-3 years and that i can enjoy without having to worry about when im gonna need to replace it.

Get a plasma with a digital comb filter. That is 1080p anything below that is not a true hd tv.

sams club has a philips 42" plasma for $995 and a samsung 42" for $1200

but they probably arent 1080p .

about every 4000-8000 hours of usage...but when you replace it the picture looks exactly like it did when new, plasma their is no going back...

lcd is best. and if your budget is sub 1000 for a 42 dont expect a quality tv.

on the plasma when it is out the plasma tube is dead cost to replace is the same price as a new set.

some times it is half that time. and if you know where to look you can find the bulbs for about half the price.

inlaw is a tv repairman.

in the rear projection mitsubishi is about the best and if there is a repair it wil be min. $200-$400

Don't be such a cheap *** and go to circuit city, but the Panasonic TH42PX75U 42" 720P plasma at $1299 plus an additional 10% off when you buy online and pickup instore...

Thats 1251.90 after tax for one of the best 42" plasma's on the market...
