Help with my gain setting

So i finally set it with a DMM today after putting on my 2nd battery. My HU's pre out is supposed to be 4V. According to Gain Tutorials im supposed to be at 54.77ACV (though maybe a lil higher since an SAZ300D can output more than that so i set it to like 56.somethin). The thing is I had to set my gain almost to max to get that. I thought since my HU's got 4V output it wouldnt need as much as going all the way up on the gain to reach that level. Might my HU not actually put out 4V preout or what may be the problem?

It was a -6db 60hz test tone. Im pretty sure i did the equation correctly. I mean 3000 watts @ 1 0hm = 3000, square that and its 54.77, and up to 56.somethin for 3100 and 3200 watts (account for headroom the amp might actually be able to put out). I kept Loudness at Loud2 setting since its a setting I always keep on. The EQ wasnt flat but I disabled my HU power to the speakers anyways and I dont mess with the bass-end on the eq. (incase that isnt clear, only the mid and high section of the eq had been touched, no low). No bassboost and Sub Level on HU set at 8(highest level possible). And no bassboost set on amp either. ACV set to 200 on the DMM. Kept sub speaker wire unplugged while testing. Let me know if any other info might help but yea. Any ideas why gain needs to be so high?

4v is not continuous. Multiple Amplifier GAIN Adjustments Read this and start over.

you should get your hands on an oscilloscope to verify you're not clipping with this gain setting.

you may need a load bank on the amp to achieve it's rating... or maybe the amp isn't as powerful as you think it is.

the preout voltage can vary my mfr and even model. a oscilloscope is required to know for sure. you might not be able to achieve the rated power without a line driver.

Hmm. Maybe someone in SD has one I could use.

But thats interesting. The only reason I dont think I need a line driver though is because my gain was ALMOST at full but not all the way and the speaker connections read the necessary ACV. But your right oscilloscope is only way to know for sure. Ill checkout that link too subzero
