Help with Linear Audio

A very long time ago, I had some Ultra Linear products that were AWESOME. Very nice SQ, at a reasonable price. I remember that they had gotten kinda expensive, and also I decided to use Infinity Reference in all my new projects. I see a company out now called Phase Linear, is this the same company?

I can't test out or audition the speakers, or I would have no need to ask. But they are priced very reasonable, and I am in need of 4 6x8's badly for my work truck. I am upgrading from worn out Fosgates that are dull and lifeless now after years of getting wet.

Please tell me if you have any experience or knowledge of the new Ultra products.

they're a low budget company, as you know. they don't sound half bad for the price. i'd worry more about the life of the product. much like pyle and MA, which get pretty loud, they blow pretty quickly on stated rms power.

Thank you for reply. I know that they are not the best out there, but I want decent, full, sound. I do not want that "tinny" sound that the new pioneers at wal-mart have. I can get the 6x8's at $25 a pair after discount, just needing something to make noise. But I have 2 cherry old school JBL GTO502 that i can use in plates. I love these, but cant decide on effort to make plates is worth it.

i would do the jbl's. never done a side by side comparison, but my bet would be that the jbl's will have much better response than the ultra linear's.

Thats what I'm thinking, as I LOVE those JBL's. They are very sharp, crisp, and lifelike. Guitars and cymbals sound true on them, no worries about bass as I will run a 125hz hpf on those channels. I think they were perhaps the best choice under Infinity Kappa when i purchased them years ago. They actually sounded better than the new Reference line that had just came out.

What would you suggest using for my plates? I have MDF--too thick probably, ABS plastic, and 1/8 steel plate. I can also get some 1/4 Lauan board, I just need an idea.

i use mdf. 1/2 inch mdf if you need thinner. you can get an adapter plate off ebay i think.

I appreciate the answers man. In the morn, I will start on new mdf adapter plates, I have plenty of room for my 3/4. I may look further, as the door has a factory spacer to go from 6x9 to 6x8, and it angles up some. Maybe if I remove it, I will have room to run the 5.25 JBL and an old pair of Kappa 3.5 in each door. Power is not an issue, and I also have component tweeters up front.

i see you like your kappa's. i did not like my reference series 6.5 comps at all. the kappa's sound any better? particularly in the midbass area. i find that alot of comps are weak. only heard 2 sets of comps i actually like.
