Help with amp install problem

Well, I purchased a new amp to replace my Pioneer GM-D8601 in my 08 Nissan Versa. I bought the Car Audio Bargain CAB-1600.1 and planned on only setting it at about 1200 watts for now. Figured 1200 was safe on an SA-15 until my o-scipe shows up. To install the amp I pulled the 4 gauge kit and installed a new 1/0 kit. Had enough to also run a second wire from the alt to battery. Now, the only thing that changed between the 4 gauge install and the 1/0 install was the wire from alt to battery and I grounded the amp to a rear seat belt bolt. The 4 gauge kit was grounded to the floor in the rear, next to the spare tire well. Got everything installed, put the fuse in, and turned it on. Got the amp to 10v on my dmm and suddenly the sub started making alot of noise, followed by a pop and smoke. Immediately turned everything off and pulled the fuse. Looks like a capacitor in the amp popped. Any ideas what went wrong? I'm leaning towards either the alt wire or the new ground location. Any help is appreciated.

i typically measure the amp for the first time without a load connected.

the amp can fail internally and send unforgiving signals to the speakers/sub. bummer situation.

the alt wire didn't cause that. the ground location would only result in more resistance and thus earlier clipping due to lower voltage.

an internal failure can just be poor quality control.

I'm hoping that as it was only for a few seconds I didnt damage my SA-15. If I did? Well, been wanting to get a zv4 anyways. So it was most likely just a bad amp then? Going to give a replacement a shot, if that one messes up too then going to just ask for a refund.
