Help please. First stereo hook up.

I have a 1989 ford crown Victoria ltd. I'm trying to install my stereo from my last car that decided to blow up. It is a kenwood 1032 and a couple of clarions for the dash. My problem is that I have almost no idea what I'm doing. I bought the wiring harness for my model vehicle and started to hook it up. I got about three cables spliced when my harnesses colored wire chart stopped matching up with the colored wired chart for the ltd. I have the constant, the ground, and e ignition hooked up. Not to much worried about the speakers right now. I like to work in steps. Want t get it working with the illuminated LCD lighting up and all first. It receives and ejects CDs great. It doesn't have any thing else going for it though. Can someone give me some pointers as to why the cd player isn't working as far as the display goes? Thanks.
