Help picking out a video card

Nobody even asked before answering his question? What type of computer is this, gaming, media center, just your basic web/surf computer or what? If it's a gaming computer, get the best one u can afford. Also if it is a gaming computer, what kind of games do you play and or planning to play also. 1950 is probably the best bang for the buck, it is up to par and actually even better then the 8600GTS, I just purchased the 8600GTS recently from newegg. It's not bad. I love newegg, they are the best computer website to buy from, good, reliable, best customer service, fast shipping. I highly suggest you to order from them when u do.

Better to get something that can play direct 10 games .. like the 8600GT it's a waste of money if u get an older video card that only plays direct 9 games .. worthless IMO .. and since the newer cards are affordable why not get a newer video card rather than an older model

How do you figure ?
X1950 GT = Nearly twice the performance for $5 more after rebate

8600 GT = $20 more, slightly faster, overclocks way better, updated shader model

ehh i didnt read before i posted, i havnt been looking into comps since the 7800 was the top card...but now looking at it those are better choises

Funny I should see this thread, as I am building me a new computer. Bought my stuff today, and I got a 7950gt. It's a huge upgrade from my old 6600. Gonna run an athlon 64 x2 4200+ chip, 2 gb ram and some other fun stuff on a good ol' asus mobo in a classic centurion case.

Jmac, your computer makes me wet //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

And I second Jmac's post. Heat is a big concern. How big is your case, how messy is the inside wiring? General climate of use?

Computers run like absolute garbage when hot, and if your case can't handle the heat...then no Ati.

I second the 8XXX. Nvidia's always done me right.

lucky im still building mine, havnt bought parts in a while for it...i got a opty 170, DFI lanparty Expert...thats all...lmao, maybe a 8800 if i can find a good deal, and some crucial ballistix ram...i hope i can beat 2500mhz with this set up...people do it all the time but i really never really OC'ed before, and also off of air cooling, i dont want to run water yet......Jmac im guessing your on some other comp forums..if so which ones?

The computer I'm building next week is better //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

That is better, but I don't play games much. So, to each his own. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I thought I remember you saying you had a 8800GTX you said you got for like $250 or something like that. Word on those C2D, they overclock like a mofo from what I've seen. I'm probably picking up a E6600 after the price drop, if I don't decide to get a quad for $250. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/naughty.gif.94359f346c0f1259df8038d60b41863e.gif

I just noticed the guy didn't even post in here again. Wonder what he ended up going with. I just got done building my computer as well. Not as great as yours jmac but its **** good enough for my needs. I know Intel is out beating AMD right now. But I'm just a die hard amd fan.

Asus Micro ATX NForce Mobo

Apevia QPACK Micro ATX Case

AMD 64 X2 5600+

Corsair XMS2 DDR800 PC6400 2gig

Western Digital Raptor 10krpm SATA 36g (For OS only basically, I have other hard drives)

MSI Geforce 8600GTS OC edition

Windows XP PRO SP2

It's nice. The motherboard is ok, I don't like it as much because it's not a overclock friendly. But its alright. I wish I could afford the 8800GTS/GTX. I just ordered a set of Logitech speakers 5300e thx certified. I love the micro atx case though, not roomy but I small looking it is. I need to tuck up the wires on the inside. The video card took up like 1/2 the space inside. Also whered you pick up that 8800gts for that price at.
