Help my son and I build our first box

If I go ported I am pretty sure the slotted port is out,..I just don't have the room. If I do ported I think I want to tune towards the low end, 26hz-28hz I have read this will cause the loss of some db's but over-all better sound quality or more "musical". I guess the question is can I fit a 2cube box(after subs and ports installed) back there.

NO way sealed is the biggest waste of equipment in the world unless your going for ultimate sq ut yeah NOT worth the output loss.
Dont let ppl tell you ported is only 3db louder which is a lot. A real ported box plays way lower and more like 6-7+ dbs louder than a sealed box no matter what.

Every time i have ever installed a real ported box in someones car alot of just box swaps ppl freak out and realize what they have been missing.

Just happened two weeks ago aq hdc3 10 in a truck under the seat SEALED we switched to a ported box 1 cube with 4" AERO and it made it soo much louder seriously probably over 10dbs on the meter the .5 sealed was just not putting out anything even with tons of excursion
You're not using the right subs in sealed boxes. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

A 10" HDC is about the total opposite of a good sealed box sub, not to mention you put it in a small box that'll have no low-end to begin with. Learn how to properly read and interpret t/s specs and realize that the comparison you're doing is not optimal, at all.

Thanks for joining the thread RAM_Designs,..your reputation precedes you! Do you have some advice for my situation?

2 3" aero ports could be adequate.

Porting lower will cause an increase in required port length. Sometimes, in compact spaces, it is hard to find the length needed.

Feel free to PM me with any questions, ideas, etc.

Best wishes,

B'G.

With the 55"x14"x8" dimensions that you gave earlier, will you have space for the subs to down-fire, or do you need to cut back on that 8" in order to have room for them to down-fire? If 8" is from the hump in the middle of the floor, then it seems like you might have enough room to put the subs down-firing on one side of the box and use a full length(17") 4" aeroport firing out the other side. This should give you a tuning of around 29-30hz.

Hopefully you can fully use that 8" height. If the subs have to be on each side it's going to be a little trickier, and a port on each side might be a better option.

I probably should have mentioned that I am planning on building the box with a divider wall seperating the subs, so it will be right at 1cube per sub and each compartment ported,......is this the best way?

Which direction should the ports face?

My 8" measurement is coming from the floor under each seat not including the hump, that should give me enough room to downfire correct?. I had planned on spacing the subs out, one behind the driver and one behind the passenger. I am open to suggestions though.

Separate chambers are not necessary. A little bracing would suffice and allow for a single 4" as RAM is suggesting.

If you were to create separate chambers, you could use a 3" aero in each chamber. Would still function.

With the dimensions you gave, subs down/port side would be a top choice due to space restrictions, if possible.

If I do not need to build seperate chambers I am all for it! The rear bench is a 60/40 so the depression under the seat is larger behind the passenger so I could place the subs there and run the port out the drivers side rear door?

If they share a common chamber, just ensure that you use some form of bracing. Dowels can work while using only very little space.

And yes you could do the layout as you just stated. Just play with different ideas and see what clicks //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

In an effort to keep from bothering you guys,... let me make sure I have the basics right.

1.) I need somewhere around 2.2-2.5 cubes space before the subs are added. ( I am using a calculater from the12volt.com is this accurate?)

2.) I can build the box as an open compartment with bracing and place the subs down-firing either on one side or seperated.

3.) I need a 4"x17" aeroport from the side(that is my only option because of space).

How far away from the rear or top in this case does the back of the sub need to be and how much space to allow from the floor for excursion?

Depending on your final airspace, the single 4" Aero will achieve tuning in between 30-28hz. The more airspace, the lower the tuning possible.

1,2,3 seem good.

Make sure that there is adequate room for excursion, and adequate room for air dispersal inside the enclosure. I'd say 2"+ if possible.

Since it is your first try at the box building game, please just go sealed on this first box. Keep it simple, make sure its sealed up nice and tight and it will sound just fine to everyone you know. Also, don't pay attention to the forum members and their huge argument about SQ/SPL and which style of box to go with. Sealed will sound just fine on all types of music, especially down-firing in a truck.

I would love to go sealed,..its easier to build or should I say harder to mess up and it fits better in our small space,..but I don't want to give up to many db's. I spoke with my son this morning and he definitely wants it to be loud,....louder the better! What kind of sacrifice is a sealed box going to be? We are already dealing with budget subs and low power amps, just trying to make the best of it.
