****HELP me with SQ****

Boom
I want to start competing in some SQ competitions, and need some help with getting started.

I have a Alpine CDA-9857

4 Ascendant Audio 6 1/2 in the doors. (2 on each side of the front door.)

I have 2 Assasain 8's and a Avalanche 18.

Pheonix Gold MPS2500, and a Orion amp for the highs, puts about about 200 x 2 @ 2 ohms. (old school)

The HU has no crossovers, But i do have 2 old kicker resolution series crossovers. The amps have no crossovers as well, neither! So I need some help here guys! What can I do to get started?

first thing i would do is examine the installation of all your components. the imaging of the speakers and the "enclosures" they are in. also get a meter that can read frequencies so you can see where your system can improve.

btw how do those 2 8's workout with the 18?

they arent hooked up together. I just wanted to post what i had.

Basically....I dont know what Would be better for SQ. The AVA 18, or the AA Assasain 8's? I'm leaning for the 8's, but also. IF I sealed the AVA 18, that would be kick a$$. The mid-bass is awesome from the HU power, but I have not 1 crossover installed, so I need to buy one. I need some advice on a Sub x-over, and a 2-way crossver. and maybe some times on 3-way?

SQ is a long hard tireing road, especially if you are going to compete in an Install based comp. If so, My suggestions would be. Get some external Processing, of course some tweeters, and the other missing components. And the Completly gut your vehicle. Deaden everything, LOOM all wiring, SECURE all Wireing, (take pictures of these steps because the judges are going to want to see them) I Personally would go with the 2 8" subs, In a nice sized sealed or Ported and tuned way low. Or you could run the 18 sealed, and just Eq it down for a SQ run. But By no means is Competing in SQ easy.

You wil need tweeters, or a comp. set up front & another in rear . It is possible to run 6.5" in front & a 5 1/4" in back. The backs are just for rer fill.
^ Don't listen to that.

Going active gives you a much greater ability to tweak things. I use an Arc MX-1 since my H/U won't do X/O. Unfortunately I have no idea what tweeter would match well with those mids.

SQ is pretty subjective, what might sound good to you, might not to the judge. I think I remember reading where a judge thought a stock GM system sounded better than someone here.

Agreed.

It's a TON of tweaking and changing things. You'll likely a long time on it trying to get the sound you want.

1.) Get a set of Rainbow tweeters

2.) Get a head unit with a lot more procesing

3.) Get a good Active Xover, 4 band

4.) Get a good 30band EQ

5.) Get a good 4 channel amplifer or two good 2 chanel amplifiers

If it where me I would run the Assasin 8's from 50-200Hz, the Aersenals from 200-2000, and the tweeters from 2000-20000. Put all three infront of you. Assasins and 6.5's in the kick or lower door and the tweeters on the dash (to help raise sound stage).

THEN run the Ava18 sealed in the trunk from 50Hz down.

Then start messing with aiming of the tweeters. When you get the sound you like you are ready to move on.

After that is all done start to play with cross over poits and slopes. When it gets sounding good to your ears move on.

Now start EQing. Doing 20-20000Hz sweeps with a mic will tell you where your dips are and you can work them out with the mic and by ear.

Now start messing with time alignment assumeing that is a feature on your head unit.

That is a basic run down of the tuning and set up competition SQ cars go through. Ive never personally set up an SQ car for competition, but that is what Ive have helped do for daily SQ.

Hey awesome....Yeah, I KNOW that it is a lot of work, and yes it is VERY subjective. However....nothing pleases me more then some kick a$$ rock on the mids, but if I can get it all to sound good at once, then I'll be happy. Now I'm a long road from doing any damage to a score sheet, but I've got to start from scratch. This is it.

Now first things first.....

I'm thinking about the AVA 18 sealed...however, I have a 1998 cutlass...same as a malibu, and I dont have a million cubes for .707. I also thought that the 8's would be great, but the substage is up in the air. So all thoughts are welcome;)

Processing....

What is the best X-over I can get? ...Just tell me and I'll get it...

What is the best EQ I can get?

What HU do you recommend?

I think that one of the most expensive projects will be the deadening. Thats a mess...

QUESTION!

There has always been a long debate about mounting tweeters. Level to the ear, down 2'' from the mid...etc. Where should I place the tweeters?

So many questions and thoughts I know, but this is a long haul and This is what I have to do to learn. Thanks alot guys for helping me.

processing I'd go with a P9 combo or an H701, both are good units with lots of ability that arent' ridiculously expensive.

edit: Since you have an alpine hu, go with the h701
