help me with choosing a job..

I am looking forward to getting a new job in sales, but I have a few questions with unknown answers. I do not have a degree or any specialized training just retail and serving experience in a resturant. All totaling about 4 years.

I want a job were I can make around 35k starting or minimum base salary plus commission. I am not striving too high here in the begining.

The main problem is where in the economy to look for a sales job that is an overall good job with the pre-requsistes I have?

A lot of job listings I see are mostly for insurance sales. Which would require me to get a state license ( don't know how hard it is to get that). I really have not seen sales for anything outside of insurance.

Well I figure with all the people on here maybe I could get some "inside advice". On where I should look or what to expect selling for _____. Any help on how to make my own resume` would be appreciated. When I search it is all gimmicks for a fee. Rather just do it myself if there is a template.

Thanks guys,

Ben

are you kidding me? 35k base, with no experience. good luck with that one
expecially if that is daytona FLORIDA. florida has the worst pay per cost of living in the country. no degree you wont even interview and any job with over 20k base

I think tiger direct sales pays $6.50 per hour plus commision, and they pay more than most places. If you can sell you can make money. When i worked for them 8 year ago I was clearing like 50k but I sold ice to eskimos back then I didnt care LOL. I was selling cyrix based computers as if they were the best thing out LOL.

Sales is the best paying job without a degree. Mostly based on your personality to sell. And why should my age have to do with anything? Doesn't sound like an EOE type of deal does it?

The couple ads I saw said 1-2 years in retail with diploma or equivalent.

this perticualr one also had a base of 33k with earning with comission around 60k.

I think when I walk in there with the shirt and tie and my walk and talk I could swing it. Also considering it's pretty much an inside hire, my friend has worked there for a year and a half. I don't know many people with salaries of 20k who drive 350z's, in which my friend does.

I was just looking for advice or *constructive criticism* not negativity. But thanks anyway.

College is good, but thats a whole other story.

Continue with the positvity.

Ben

WELCOME TO REAL LIFE. No such thing as EOE in real life. LOL They dont hire you if they dont want to. and yes I see many kids making minimum wage jobs driving expensive cars here in Miami. amazing what you can do with no bills and mommy and daddy paying your debts. Just cause its not the answer you wanted doesnt make it negativity, makes it reality //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

I have rolled with the punches many times. It's just why word something in more of a negative way then a posistive way. I.E. "Hey man, I don't know if that is a little out of reach, but hey go for it."

And what do I have to lose, and hour of my time in an interview on a my current day off? Meanwhile I jump at oppurtunity while others sit back till it's "comfortable". I am not getting my hopes up, but it is worth a shot.

I was looking for people who have had expereince or know how in sales to shed some light on how to make some headway.

Thanks though,

Ben

And for the record Ruckus, "treat others how you would like to be treated"...i.e. your reaction to tommyk's advice in Kenny P's thread.. Thanks buddy.

no offence, but your young, inexperienced, and uneducated. those three things will prevent you from getting some high paying job. its all about the image you present. i would have a hard time wanting to buy something from someone as young as yourself.

Go find a skill you can quickly learn such as PC repair or something. You will be hard pressed to find what you are looking for.. If you are good at sales maybe you can sell cars or become a mortgage broker.. both have money in them if you do it right but both could also leave you broke.

At least you got dreams. I am 20 and work at a industial and construction supply store. Learning product and what not. Someday I should run my own store/ outside sales for the store. But I am realistic about it and am not just jumping into shallow water head first. I would suggest you get involved in something and stick with it, then move into sales.

Thanks Mike...you were honest but not mean about it.

To maybe make it more clear. This is for a a private school recruiting mostly males in the 18-20 range into a flight program. I think I could relate easy with the guys coming in and such. But also I could see them taking a serious decision off a person of there own age.

So Mike you don't think there is much hope in that job for me?

Lets just say I go for the interview, should I wear a jacket or just shirt and tie?

Dark or light colors?

Specific things to say or do while in the interview?

Thanks again,

Ben

as i said, you dont have enough experience, or education to start at the top, i would suggest starting lower and working your way up.

me personally, i always dress up as much as i can, suit if u have it, if not nice shirt and tie, make sure the tie isnt too bright or dark. dont want to come across as overly agressive or too laid back. find a good neutral color that works with your outfit, as far as what to say, be honest, relaxed, look em in the eyes, firm handshake, confidence, these are the things i'd suggest for anyone going into any type of interview
