Help me set up x-overs

Hey guys I am relatively new to car audio. I have installed a pair of Infinity 6.5s and have them running off of a JBL 180.2. I also have an Alpine 9830. Now what I am trying to figure out is what x-over to set and where to set it? I have the x-over on the amp and the x-over on the HU. Which would be best to use? The HU can be set to HP-80-120-160-flat and LP-80-120-160-flat. Now my guess is the HP is anything over the selected hz and the LP is anything below the hz selected. What about the flat setting? Same with the amp. I can switch the amp from HP to LP to Flat and there is a knob that adjusts from 32 to 320 hz. Should I use the amp or the HU? How do I determine where the x-overs are set to?

I'm new to this site, there may be a "crossover tutorial" and I just don't know about it. Anyway, you are correct in your definition of highpass and lowpass. Flat means everything passes, so the crossover is turned off. It sounds like the x-over on your HU has 3 freqs to pick from, while the amp has a knob. The knob should give you better control since it's infinitely adjustable, so I'd set your HU to "flat" and use the amp to set the x-over. I'm not sure what you should set it to, maybe somebody else will chime in.

If you do not have a sub you may not want to high pass them at all. They will not get as loud without distorting but at least you will have some bass. Or mabey use the crossover on your amp set to around 40-50Hz to filter some of the lowest frequencies. This would allow you to give them a little more power. If you have a sub, or add one, high pass the 6.5's around 80-100 Hz and low pass the sub around the same frequency.

Wayyyyy to many details.
Well people always complain that the original poster didn't include enough info so I made sure everyone knew. I don't have a sub yet but it should be hooked up in about 2 weeks. So when I adjust my gain tomorrow I will adjust the x-over tomrrow too. Thanks guys.

you have to set your xovers to what sounds good

its all based on how loud youre going to listen to your music, how much bass you want etc

sometimes i have my HPF set to 80hz, sometimes 120hz
