Help me decide on these hu's!

Im thinking about upgrading my head unit in the near future so that I can run an active setup. Ive mainly been looking at the Alpine CDA-9887, 9886, and the IDA-X001.

I want to go with teh IDA-X001 because it looks the sexyest imo but I would need an external source to play music off of and I dont have an ipod. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with or new if it was possible to connect an external hard drive through the usb connection? If I can I will probably go that route. I kinda like the layout of the 9886 over the 9887. I could get away with the IDA-X001 and an external hard drive and be just over the price of the 9887. But if was to pick between the 9887 and 9886 Id prefer the look of the 9886. Can you really survive with no cd player if you went with ida-x001? That's gotta be annoying, like if someone hopped in your car with a cd and you were like, "oh, i can't play that on my hu"! lol that would ****!

Yeah that aspect would ****, but in all I would be happy with an external hd. Is there any reason you can't do that with a 9887? I think you can also. Idk if browsing or searching the files would be the same though.

My kenwood x791 does anything, ipods, usb drives. Great browsing through the HU and fast. (I leave the ipod in the glove compartment) Only complaint is when searching by artist have to scroll entire list. It's always on random or playlist anyways though. Haven't tried hard drive yet but assume it would work the same as usb drive.

PS: I honestly think you'd be better off buying an ipod or really big usb drive. Why even bother with hard drive? An ipod would be cheaper and you would have it be a portable mp3 player also. Downside is dealing with itunes, drag and drop with some pain in the *** if files aren't named correctly. USB drives are pretty huge now, unless you really need the hd for insane amounts of mp3's.

Does anyone know the big difference between the 9886 and 9887? I might look into the 9886 more, for some reason the layout on the front appeals to me. Prolly because it resembles my current 9847 so much.

The only problem is I love alpine decks and dont want to part with them. I would love to find one of the previous model alpine decks in the classifieds that can run active.

Does anyone know off hand which decks I should be looking for? I cant remember the exact model numbers but cant the 9835 and 55 run active? Somethin like that I cant remember.....

Thats what Im thinkin, Im gonna save my next couple checks for a 9887 but if I can find somethin in the classifieds before then I will pick it up.
