That particular sub will get louder after a breakin period (some subs do not), the spider is very stiff when brand new and will kill the subs sensitivity, if you allow a few weeks of regular use the sub will gradually sound better and finally start to kick ***.

To accelerate this process and get better sound from the right from the start, use a ported enclosure from the start then switch to a sealed later if you want.

Another option is to run a 20hz tone through the sub overnight(12hours), take it out of the box and run it free air (keep the coil vent unblocked), hook it up to any amp that will handle the ohms and just turn it up loud enough to get the sub moving close to Xmech, not alot of power is needed to get the sub moving because its not in an enclosure. The fibers in the spider will break down at an accelerated rate and soften it up.

I did that with my solobaric. works well.

I just installed my 12" RL-P today and had a similar experience. I am running it off of a nine.1 as well but @2 ohms putting out 900 watts( gains set with multi-meter). I was getting very little output just like you at first. I played with my Alpine 7995 settings and set the bass x-over to 80hz and it is alot better now. I was very worried at first but feel better now. It seems like I really have to crank the volume to get it moderately loud. Honestly I was expecting a little more volume with almost 1,000 watts. The SQ seems good in my 1.3c.f. sealed box built by Marv. Can anyone give me some recomendations on setting up the amp/ headunit x-over/subsonic settings? Will this sub get much louder over time? As it stands now it seems about as loud as my previous setup which was a 12" JLw3 in a prefab with 600 watts.

i still say X2 to the wiring the coils out of phase
tell us exactly how the wires are being ran
My amplifier has 4 speaker terminals even though its a Nine.1 1 channel amplifier Monoblock Class D (2 positives and 2 negatives). I have a negative and a positive wire going from the amp to my Enclusure terminal box. The other two amp speaker terminals are still open and empty. Then inside my box, i have a wire soldered to each wire, so now i have 4 total wires inside, 2 positive and 2 negatives, and i have those going to the proper terminals on the subwoofer. I have no clue what i did wrong, and why the sub won't get loud unless i turn the gain almost completely to full.

Seriously, these sound like shit until they breakin, put them in a ported box if you want them to wang right away.

Eclipse subs are the same way.

Well, if your sure i wired it in right ill just leave it alone. I don't have a ported box either, or i would be using it in my car right now. Plus I do not have a big enough trunk for a bigger ported box. Im very worried though, this thing is getting like 1200 watts, and it doesn't sound like it is putting out more than 200, i really can't see how its going to get miracously better in a few weeks of break in.

To save time assume that I know everything.. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/naughty.gif.94359f346c0f1259df8038d60b41863e.gif

It will make a night and day difference, the spider that the RL-p uses is very thick and strong and will need time to become pliable, the thick spiders affect on the sound, while it is new is like pressing against the cone with a towel, output and efficiency are reduced greatly.

Why make em like this?

Because it makes the suspention very strong, the drawback is a long breaking period.

Have you looked at your ported box options?, not every good sounding ported box needs to be huge.

I figured that a sub running off of 1200 watts rms would be loud as hell, but its not, in fact its barely louder than my older 300 watt Infinity Perfect. Whats the deal?!?!

well, even with the break in, i would have thought it would still sound nice and loud. But in fact it sounds suprisingly low, and the bass is very off sounding and just doesn't sound right.

1. I have the Amp gain on 60% right now, and the sub sounds loud, but it sounds a little louder than my old 250 watt sub/amp combo, definately doesn't sound anywhere near close to 1200 watts. Also, if i turn the Gain down lower than 50%, you literally cannot hear the sub.
How did you determine "60%" is the correct gain setting?
