Help buying my first laptop! ?!

about what people are saying about laptops being hard to upgrade...

u can still easily upgrade parts of them.

ram is easy to get to, video card is slightly easy to get to, harddrive just buy an external drive if u need extra space, you cant really **** with processors or mobos but if u buy a nicer laptop you shouldnt need to

i have an e1705 (dell) and its amazing, does everything i need it to and more, and ive upgraded it a few times. it even has a 4 in 1 card reader, but i dunno about micro sd

i play newer games on it flawlessly

do you think i will have any problems with the sony vaio mentioned above? And can a laptop use the same type of internet as a regular computer?

yes and the laptop will probably be wifi capable as well

as far as sony, they are decent, but as with any sony product you are paying a premium for the name

i just bought an ibm t61 before i left for school, ~$1600

core 2 duo 2.2ghz, 15.4" widescreen sxga+ tft, 100gb 7200rpm hdd, 2gb ram, 128 dedicated nvida vid card, fingerprint technology, integrated bluetooth/wireless net, dvd recorder, xp pro

i likes it, 2nd ibm i bought in a row

FWIW you could get a decent laptop and a desktop for $1500. If you dont need it to be portable you will get much more for your money going with a desktop.

LOL I will sell you both my laptop, desktop and a 17" LCD for that much;)

Here is my laptop:

Compaq R4000

Windows XP Professional

Office XP

AMD Athlon 64 4000+ (2.4GHz/1MB L2 Cache)

15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen (1280x800)

128MB ATI Radeon Xpress 200M w/Hypermemory

1GB DDR SDRAM

80GB 5400 RPM Hard Drive

Samsung DVD+/-RW/R burner

54g Integ. Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN & Bluetooth

12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

Good Luck:)

whats wifi?
built in wireless internet

you can take the laptop to anyplace that offer "wifi" like restaurants, bars, etc and get free internet sevice

also handy if you want to move the computer from room to room in your house or steal your neighbors wireless access;)

thanks, but ive had my eye on this laptop since it came out

Do i still have to pay for service?
Although I am not advocating it, if your neighbor has wireless internet and they dont secure it you can probably steal it from them, otherwise you need your own service.

The wifi in bars/restaurants is usually free as long as you buy something

the HP laptop's are all on sale at Best Buy yesterday my nephew bought one with AMD Turion or something like, 1g of ram, and 160gb HD and it has a 17" screen I think all for $650 on sale, I think their was one for $900 and it had 2 gb of ram and a bigger HD I think, you might wanna check out ur local Best Buy and grab one of the ads and check them out.

Look into getting a Mac. I got a MacBook for college and I like it better than any of the thinkpads and other laptops I see around campus that my friends and other people are using. The MacBooks are 1200, and the MacBook Pro's are 2000, so you could get a MacBook on your $1500 budget.
ye..i'm getting a macbook very soon..so if anyone is selling one let me know also..but ye man..can't go wrong with a macbook..they are very reliable and you'll never need antivirus software.

I have a Celeron M (1.7Ghz) processor in my laptop, and it was burying a Pentium 4 Northwood (2.8Ghz). I was using PerformanceTest 6 on the comparison, my Laptop had 480MB RAM, 64MB video, and the Celeron M. The desktop had a Pentium 4, 512MB RAM, and 256MB video. My laptop had a rating of (I Think) 350 points, and the desktop had a rating of only 280 points. The only thing that is different from mobile processors and 'full blown' processors a.k.a. desktop processors are the voltage requirements.
