i know i need to but anything else i can do for now to try?
Yes, you can go to Wal-Mart and buy a DMM for $10 then do the test I described. Without a DMM there is no accurate way to test if your amp is working or not; however, if you wish to go on a wild goose chase, be my guest...

but when i get it i just stick the connections in where the speaker wire goes and see if i there is voltage? ...never really used one before
Yep, set the DMM to DC voltage (or AC, I don't remember to be honest), take the speaker wire out and put the probes of the DMM in to measure for voltage.

Yeah, put the probes on the power wire and ground wire of the amplifier. Multimeter on DC. Do not put it on the wires that go to your speakers. M
