Help: alpine 9856 ipod connection

Well I bought an alpine cd player w a hookup, when I connect it, it tells me it's not a charging device and I have to drag too the right (as if unlocking) and then go too my music before it will tell me that I have an accessory hooked up. Well when I click the volume button too search it doesn't do anything. I'm lost.. any suggestions? Thanks
