Having Trouble with Subs

Alright, so i have some older (2) 12" rockford punch series (XLC to be exact) In my 1992 grand prix le. I have them ran with a brand new JL Audio 500/1 Amp. I also have a new battery in the car.

But the problem is that my powerful hit goes by fast. Like lets say i let my car run and have my subs low/turned off. I will than play them and they sound great and hit pretty hard for what they are, but after about 3-4 minutes of music and lettin em pound they start to get weaker on the hits. Its like the power dissapates from them. IDK if it has something to do with my subs, amb or car battery. Any ideas?

The only reason im worried about the battery is because tomarrow im going to pickup the T1s that i ordered as well as my 1500 watt rockford amp.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a problem with the amp, recheck all wiring, especially before installing that 1500 watt rf amp. What is the impedance and vc config of the subs?
Let me quick google them, they are pretty old subs, what would be the problem with the amp. It did this with my old amp to, and when my sub hits and night my lights dim immensely.

Your electrical is not up to par then. If you are having problems with a 500/1, you will not like what happens when you put the RF amp in, I assume its a bd 1500 or 1500 bd or whatever the new rf amps are?

Most XLC's where single voice coil 4ohm or 8ohm. They where good solid subs in the mid to late 90's.

Has it always done this?

Do you have a good ground?

Version 2 500/1's power down(like 25%) when they get hot.

How would you fix this problem? A second battery/ or a compacitor?

How would you prevent it from getting hot? Yes, i have a great ground.

Sounds like ur electrical is weak or something, mabe you should try to check

the voltage with a dmm, Like power it on check it and after 3min check the voltage again to see if it drops

Use a multi meter check ur voltage drops in ur system and amp......why did no 1 suggest this?
Basically like i said, the lights will flicker at night. So basically i just don't have enough power. I will look into capacitors/and 2nd batteries.

you need a bigger alternator and probably a bigger and newer battery. what size alternator do you have now. what kind of car?
1992 Grand Prix

1000cranking amps Battery (Brand New)

New big alternator (biggest we could find) i believe 200 (whatever they are rated at)

we also have a 1000watt amp going to the mids and highs

Poor electrical is solved by, in this order:

1) Do the big 3, search here in forum

2) Get the right size wire, as a matter of fact, go bigger than needed. For that rf amp, go straight to 0 guage, dont mess with anything less, I dont care what your buddies tell you.

3) ground to frame, nothing else, if you dont have frame ground you have a poor ground, I dont care what your buddies tell you. EDIT: also, runs of 0 guage from front batt to rear batt will do as well as frame ground

4) Make sure your alt is up to par. I would recommend a higher output alt with that amp. If the 500/1 makes lights dim, the alt sucks. After you have done big 3, BEFORE you install your new amp do this: start the car, turn on all accesories except the radio, thats lights, ac to max, wipers, all indoor lights. Then push in the cig lighter, or turn on blinkers, if lights dim at all, your alt needs upgrading. Again, I dont care what your buddies say.

an extra batt will only help you with the car off, or if your alt sucks, it may prevent too much of a drop below 12 volts. Do what I said first before you do a batt, and before you install this new amp, or you will be coming back to us wondering why your amp is dead, or how the fire started.

Good luck
