having trouble finding my desired output volts for gain setting

ok i read the sticky and saw the formula, maybe it was too vague for me... Volts=powerxresistance. ok so what does power mean? my amps output in watts or my HU out put in volts? i have a Kicker ZX1500.1 running two L7 12's off of two ohms, my HU is a POS sony with .4 volts coming off the RCA's.... i am trying to set my gain but i dont know what my target voltage is, i can get anywhere from like 10 volts to 100 something coming off my speaker term.s when i adjust gain and bass boost.... please help

also, i have this 50htz test cd, but i downloaded it and it doesnt say how many Db's it is... how will that affect my readings?

u should definately not beable to get 100 volts and u should definately not ever set it that if u can get that high.... it should be at about 14 volts no higher

take the square root of the power times the resistance so it would be

square root (1500x2)which equals ruffly 77.4 i think

now im assuming u know how to set the gain u didnt know the number turn the dial untill it gets as close to that number as possible

nah dude i figured it out. thats y they call it an amplifier, it takes 14.4v DC and turns it into 20 30 40 and up v AC. you take your amps actual power output , mine being 1596 on the birth sheet, and multiply it by the ohms it is seeing, in my case two ohms ( two 12l72 wired in series on the sub then paralell to the amp creates a two ohm load total) so 1596 times 2 equals 3192, then you take the sq rt of that number which is 56.49 in my case. now unplug your speakers and put your DMM on the output terms of ur amp, play your 50 htz test cd and turn the gain up until you reach 56 and a half volts and that should be the optimum gain setting for that setup. then you take the mids and his and adjust them according to the sound levels from the sub. this according to JL Audio and the caraudio.com sticky thread on gain setting...
