have you driven a rotary engined car?

Hey ladies and gentleman...I was wondering if anyone perhaps have experience driving a vehicle with a rotary motor and a dual rotary motor? And how does it compare to vvtl-i, vvl, vtec, fsi and valvetronic motors etc.....I'm studying mechanical engineering, I've driven cars with the above mentioned motors except for the rotary, I'm seen how it works on display but never driven it...how does it feel? And please guys, I don't when ill be driving a rx7 or 8....and I don't think they have dual rotors....

The rx8 is a rotory motor and the most notable part of driving that can is the high revs. You just keep pushing the car harder and harder till you hit redline at around 9k rpms which is unlike other motors that redline around 5-6k rpms. Some care should betaken with these motors as the power really builds fast 1000-9k can happen in half the time of a regular piston engine.

These cars are known for fun but maintenance can be costly and oil and water temps should stay low, detonation in this motor design almost always ends in a bad motor were as other piston engines can handle detonation alot better. Air flowing over the radiator is usually the easiest way of cooling for these engine but at low speeds the air flow is minimum causing the engine to run hotter than normal.

And lastly these engine are horribly inefficient and burn fuel like crazy. They can be built for high power numbers but its gonna cost a good built due the the lack of durability and how much of the engine needs to be upgraded in order to withstand these higher power numbers. Nitrous is almost always a bad idea as the sudden increase in engine pressures can actually deform the cylinders causing a lose of piston seal and there fore lost of compression

Overall the wankle motor design is lacking but on a track were fuel cost don't matter and wind speed is high these motors excel at getting out of corners due to the rapidly climbing engine rpms resulting in faster acceleration. The downside I that most trasmissions eithe r run out of top end(top speed ability) or they dog the motor down at lower speeds. Speaking streetwise track is different with the power adders avalible today.

But its powerful for 1300 motors hey...but I think it lacks torque compared to other motors....but it has more high end talk
Horsepower is the replication of Torque.

You can have a lot of horsepower with very little torque. You do that with a high RPM.

Vtec shouldn't even be mentioned in this. As it is not reliable if pushed hard for too long. Those engines are designed to be economy cars. Nothing else.

From what I have heard from a guy I work with who owns a RX-7 twin turbo model. I believe his is a 95.

Is that the engine is SUPER smooth for idle. They build up carbon easily so the engines like to be beat on once in a while to break the carbon free.

The Apex seals have to be replaced about every 40,000 as they wear out from the rotor coming in contact with the seals.

rotaries are high revving low torque engines. they produce power similiar to how older honda engines do, meaning they stretch there torque over a longer rev range. this engine is suited towards small light weight vehicles as they dont have the torque to move a lot of mass. great engine but after driving one with the stock non turbo engine and then one with a corvette ls6 you will see why mazda doesnt produce the rotary anymore

I visited a buddy of mine. He had a mazda rx-7 in his shop that has a LS9 in it out of a camaro. I thought the car looked great. But why choose such a boring engine? America doesn't really make anything to enthusiast. And when they try (viper) they make the engine a low reving engine. Boring.

that boring engine responds extremely well to modifications. im not trying to argue with you but when did a 638hp supercharged ohv v8 engine become boring? plus a ls1/2 only adds about 56lbs and actually fits in the engine bay, retains a low center of gravity because of how compact a ohv engine naturally is. you are not going to find too many engines that make power as easy as a gm small block that will fit in a rx7s engine bay. and the ls9 never came in a camaro. the ls9 is a corvette motor. maybe you are thinking ofthe 556hp lsa

Must have been. It was out of a 2009 camaro and makes somewhere around 450 he told me. Just different tastes is all. I was more interested in the Dinan M3 that he had in his shop as well. The 638hp they got out of that motor. From what I have read/heard. Is pretty much the most they can get out of it reliably because of the Cam being in the block.

And I do understand that the GM motors are more affordable.

I am not much of a "speed" guy. I drive more for the turns, getting to work and depending on which car I'm in. The experience. For me. A completely bare bones, no power steering, no A/C, no power windows, manual everything, light as possible and an engine that puts out modest but reliable power would be a dream for me.

I normally hate trucks/SUVs. But a friend of mine 6 months ago got a Duramax. And now whenever the group hangs out. That's the vehicle we take. And I have grown to actually like it. The diesels definitely have more life in them than the gas models. And he drives like a douche and still pulls off 19mpg.

Sorry for that boring azz rant.

What are you into?

sorry faeezhio for cluddering your thread! the engine in the camaro is an ls3.great engine for sure but a ls7 maybe more your speed. its a 7 liter engine that revs to 7200rpms and makes gobs of power everywhere and fits perfectly in a rx7,240sx, and a s2000. but to answer your question im really into a lot of different kinds of vehicles. i dont really have a clear favorite but i wont touch ford, chrysler or volkswagen products. ive owned more hondas than anything else. i even have 3 honda four wheelers sitting in my garage right now. i own a 03 blazer,03 grand am and bought the wife 08 honda crv

I agree with you on the ford/chrysler. (i am not into america/japanese cars)

But we are completely opposite otherwise LOL.

But that is okkkkkkkk. That's what makes the world go around.

I am not really a speed guy. A strong 4cyl can get the job done
