i've been thinking of buying either a 9mm or a 40cal pistol but not really sure which one i should go with. i will basiclly only be using it as a plink/practice gun but may some time in the future get a permit to carry. i'm leaning more towards a 9mm just for the fact that it will be cheaper to shoot. it will also probably be a S&W Sigma even though reviews on them are back and forth.

the sigma series ok but you'll definately want to switch once you get more experienced. I had to take mine to a gunsmith and have make the trigger easier to pull...mine was a *****. .40cal.

my glock is much better but my favorite gun is my Kimber classic 1911 .45

kimbers are awsome pistols but cost a ton. get what you pay for of course

I carry daily because of the line of work I am in. I carry a Kel-tec slim 9mm and a Kel-tec p-3at .380 as a secondary. If you are trained in the weapons you carry stopping power is a non issue. In a self defense situation you will more than likely fire several shots. Well placed, well grouped shots stop assailants. Buy something you can carry comfortably and practice grouping 3 to 4 shots for self defense.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

both of these are great budget pistols worth considering

For just shooting around and plinking I'd go with the 9m. It will have the least recoil (easier to keep on target) and like you mentioned it would be cheaper. I'd try and find a service or tactical model (at least 5" in barrel length) Longer the barrel the more accurate (in theory). If you get your CCW permit then a longer barrel would be a crutch. I would also suggest trying the Springfield's new XD line as well. Once my cash flow allows I'll be purchasing a XD .45 compact for my CCW. I'm hoping to find a 1911 style .45 after that for target shooting.

How or IA's laws on handguns?? I know NY is a pain but concealed carry is allowed. Good luck with your purchase anyways!! Shooting is a hobby all should try at least once!!
