^^ I think he means like that but the sub floating in the box.. or sticks poles etc holding it up level with the opening in the cylinder.. While the cylinder is wider than the sub and that acts as a port.

you got it but as mentioned earlier it would most likely sound like ****. so im guessing adding a tube under the sub would help that.

In theory you could make it function with a large enough box so that the almost non existant port depth would still tune to something, however; ideal arrangement for ported box is to NOT have the port right on top of the woofer. You get turbulence issues that are unpredictable at best. I've seen some walls, that with a large enough box and enough cone area will pretty much just use trim rings to hold the woofers and the space around all them becomes your port area.....seen pics and never heard them so I can't say how they perform.
