I've put 6000Ks in my Grand Prix with the stock housings. I've darkened the lenses, but to be honest, I didn't really have to. Many of the douchebags you guys are referring to are the ones who don't realize that a light that bright doesn't require near the aim that a halogen does. My lights are aimed to the point where they almost can't get any lower, and I rarely get flashed. However, I still have plenty of light output, even more than my stock halogens put out. Aiming is a huge part in the perception of other drivers, and if your headlights are aimed correctly, they shouldn't blind other drivers, even with HIDs. Like I said, I've got 6000Ks, so they're pretty bright.
Anyway, I purchased a plug and play kit from MotorFiend.com, it was a very easy install and I'm really happy with the output. I only purchased the low-beams, though. My lows give me just about as much output as my brights, even being aimed as low as they are. Brights are a waste of money, IMHO. You've got to wait for them to warm up every time you turn them on, and by the time that happens, there's usually a car coming along so you'll have to turn them off again.
