Some may argue a 12ga is overkill. You do much hunting with it?
If I had to rely on grabbing a kitchen knife, I'd grab the door handle and run away
I've never been hunting, to be honest. Except for hunting the ******.

Take her to a target shooting class...see what she feels comfortable with.
I always hear that, but where do I borrow various guns to try them out? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

So what is the purpose of the police?
To collect more govt. income through fines and what not?

Nah...they are supposed to protect us but do the cops ever arrive in time to actually do anything besides take down statements? Rarely....

Also who is supposed to protect us from them if one day they decide they are going to take over? Same can be asked for the military.....

Either way, this is straying from my original argument. If you need a gun to feel protected (as opposed to any other weapon), then fine. Own a gun. Why would you own several? Further, why do you even need a gun that will kill someone? If protection is your only concern, then you only need something capable of incapacitating them. No AK's required.....
Shooting an AK is fun. I shot one at a target range and was impressed with the power. It's strange...when you are shooting something capable of such power, there is a rush of sorts. Why an individual would need one, I do not know. I don't see a personal issue with it though. But I do think they should be able for rent at shooting ranges, it is fun stuff.

Because of the information age, there really isn't a way. If the information I got on crime was limited to my local paper or something, I probably wouldn't have this fear.
Try moving North a bit. Of all the people I know closely in my city, only 5 have guns. 3 are police officers and the other two hunt. No one collects guns. Heck, in a lot of areas you don't even need to lock your doors.

If you're incapable of separating mass information from practical local implications, then that is your fault and you should realize that. If you really are at such a risk, I would wonder why that's your chosen place of residence.

But hey....we're just "evil socialists" up here.....

They let you. There is a place locally called "On Target"...for $20/hr, you can shoot whatever gun you'd like...but you have to buy ammo/targets. They also sell guns.

The reason for this, is that if you don't shoot the gun, you may not feel comfortable/confident shooting it if the time arose. I'd hate to shoot a gun for the first time in a serious situation.

"Pry it from my cold dead hands" is old and cliche. Just as the many members here that say they have mma gloves and will whoop some *** only a small percentage could/would follow through. I assume the same goes for the cold dead hands comments from people. There are the few wacko's that will hold up to it though.

Personally I enjoy shooting, including semi-auto shooting. Does that make me wierd? Maybe to a liberal or a Canadian //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Other methods are inefficient...What do you want us to use? Pepper spray? Taser? Knife? All aren't even close to 100% efficient at stopping someone...Also i would rather have a larger caliber round in case that the person i'm shooting at is wearing a vest...thats just me though....

Better to have and not need than need and not have....

Well now you're brushing close to my point. People don't keep them for logical reasons...they keep and collect them because they enjoy the power they get from those possessions. It feels good to know you have something you could use to inflict significant damage (I've shot a gun and I know the feeling). I don't believe most gun advocates actually keep their guns for protection, as most have never encountered a situation that necessitate such concern.

Is it wrong to collect for that reason? Or do you wish that people would just say..."I like to shoot guns because it makes me feel powerful"?

Well yes, I do wish people would be truthful. I think a rational mind can easily discriminate the difference in value between collecting baseball cards for fun, and collecting guns to have the power they provide. Feeling good because you have the power to destroy is not necessarily a feeling we should be seeking out, or endorsing.

Why?

"Better to have and need, then need and not have"

If you chose to carry a handgun for personal protection, chances are 99.99999% that you will not need it. However, if you ever do get into a situation that requires your firearm to save your life, the life of a friend or loved one, then by god you are thankful that you have that right to carry. People who chose to carry a firearm are not out looking for trouble, they pray they never have to use it.

There is a big difference between your "power" argument and home defense.

way big.

A gun is a tool, Do you own a crescent wrench and nothing else? "The right tool for the right job."

You don't take a 30-06 rabbit hunting and you don't take a 410 shotgun moose hunting.

You don't use a 308 for home defense because you don't want the round going through 5 houses kill several people. you use a shotgun so you only kill the cradckead trying to **** your daughter and take your dvd player.

And I don't think gun ownership is an increasing and recent happening. I'd bet that back in the 50's the percentage of homes wit firearms in them would be higher than it is now.
