We have every right to own guns...i say we should be able to own anything that the local police use...We have the right to bear arms to protect us from a corrupt govt. and/or anyone trying to harm us....

Look at Nazi Germany....the first thing Hitler did was outlaw guns so no one could revolt against him....

So the reason he owns a gun (or multiple guns) is because of fear? Because he believes that at any moment someone will break in and steal his possessions? I have spent a lot of time in the US and have never encountered this paranoia that warrants such obsession with gun possession.
Besides, it just brings up the "bring a bigger gun" argument. Personally, I'd rather let them take the TV because if I pull a piece on them, they may shoot me first. I'd rather let them take the TV and allow the police (and insurance) to do their job.

Things must be terrible in the US if you require a gun in your home to feel safe.
Fear is the reason I own a gun. I fear that some clown may take my possession and shoot me because of their fear of getting caught.

Things aren't terrible here by any means, but as a culture we are growing in suspicion and distance from one another. We build large fences to keep people out of our yards, etc. This fear is probably unwarrented. On the reverse, our social skills fall apart. I would venture to say "Back in the Day..." kids in the neighborhoods where forced into interact. Now parents see a kid snatched up somewhere else...and they force their kid to stay inside...thus social skills become limited to XBL and the internet.

There could be an instance where killing another person is warrented. Wouldn't you want to do this effectively?
Of course, but in my home, I don't think I'd need an Uzi when a 12 gauge will do just fine. Or a kitchen full of knives. Or a baseball bat.

No individual needs to own a 5, 6, 700hp car either, but we don't see people trying to make those illegal. For some people its the sport, fun, or collection of the matter that makes cars/guns/moofers/etc their hobby
I agree, no one needs to own a 700hp car either, but cars aren't purposefully built to kill people, unlike handguns and automatic weapons. Well, most cars aren't...

Some may argue a 12ga is overkill. You do much hunting with it?

If I had to rely on grabbing a kitchen knife, I'd grab the door handle and run away

Do you think that maybe the clown brings a gun because they're afraid of being shot? You don't kill someone on B&E + robbery because you don't want to be caught.

You should try living somewhere that you don't have to be so afraid of criminals.

Because of the information age, there really isn't a way. If the information I got on crime was limited to my local paper or something, I probably wouldn't have this fear.

I'd beg to differ on the reasons why someone would shoot someone on B&E. However, I don't have the data to back up my assumption. Nor do I know precisely where to get it.

Even though the 22 is less powerful, she may have a hard time shooting/aiming the 9. I don't know how stout of a lady she is...
I was thinking that too, easier to re-aim. 3 or 4 .22 hollow-points in center mass, should ruin someones night.

Just to further clarify things, this is not a gun-only issue. The same argument applies to any weapon. I don't believe we can (or should) prevent people from owning them, but what draws a person to collecting knives? And why would someone say that I would have to pry those knives from their cold dead hands?
People have a need to find purpose in life....Some people see collecting weapons as a purpose in life...without it they feel they would have a meaningless existence and most wouldn't be able to cope with that....Some feel that family, friends or possessions are their most meaningful things in life and a gun or any weapon is the only way to protect them...thus the willingness to give up their own life for that purpose....

Either way, this is straying from my original argument. If you need a gun to feel protected (as opposed to any other weapon), then fine. Own a gun. Why would you own several? Further, why do you even need a gun that will kill someone? If protection is your only concern, then you only need something capable of incapacitating them. No AK's required.....

I don't own any guns, but I plan to - not out of fear, but simply because the times I've been target shooting, it's a very stress-relieving activity. There's also something about older guns that I like from a quality of design/aesthetic standpoint.

Some people collect/rebuild cars, some people collect/rebuild guns - without knowing their own personal philosophies, I don't see the problem in owning several.
