Got hosed on ebay amplifier. Need suggestions.

I bought a Kicker kx650.4 amp on ebay that was suppose to be in good condition, but it does not work. The power light does not come on nor does the protection light. I don't hear any sound coming from it and the internal fan does not spin. I pulled out my multimeter and testing the current going to the power terminal and the remote wire via the ground wire.

The remote wire had a reading of 11.5 and the power had 12.8. When the car is turned on, it shows 12.5 on the remote and 13.8 on the power. Keep in mind that I am using the ground wire to complete these test, so I feel confident that is not the problem. I was using a Rockford Fosgate 400a4 on these wires and it worked then, and still do.

So.....I paid $100 for the amp. With the info given, is it worth me getting it repaired or sell it on ebay (listed a non-functional of course) and cut my loses. I don't know what else to do. Thanks for any input.

Did you use paypal through a credit card?

If so you can dispute the charge and you wont get billed for it.

If he listed it as "WORKING," but as-is, he will still be held liable for it being Dead On Arrival (DOA). Notify the seller what you plan to do and tell him that the amp did not work when you got it. Then tell him that you are going to file a claim with PP. Open up a PP dispute and put in the comments section that the amplifier was listed as working and arrived DOA. If he doesn't wan to negotiate, then escalate the dispute to a claim.

Unfortunately theres not much you can do then except try to sell it, or fix it as banks dont offer fraud protection on purchases like credit cards do.

That's kind of a different response than what I was expecting but......

Anyone have any idea what I can test or who can I send it to? How much should/could it be sold for? Thanks for all responses.

I would definatly file a dispute with paypal. Have you left the seller feedback yet? If you left him positive feedback then i may appear to paypal as a installation error by you. Its definatly worth a try, though.

DISPUTE! you have nothing to lose. If not. . . . it MAY be repairable but if its the board. . . toss it would be my suggestion.

i got one as is, for $50, took me ten minutes to solder a cap, now its brand new. Check the fuse(s)?

Ok, I'd sent it to kicker and they repaired it with a clean bill of health for 50 bucks. I get the package, hook up the amp and when I try to adjust the gain just a little the amp would go into protection.

I decided to take the amp to Circuit City, since they are a authorized seller, and asked them to take a look at it. While the amp was hooked up to my car and after plugging and unplugging the amp many times over I heard a shreek sound coming from one of my right speakers. They turned off my radio and concluded that the amp was still messed up and advised me to call up kicker again. They gave me some info and told me that kicker shouldn't give me a hard way to go since it is under their repair warranty and the Circuit City verified a problem.

I am driving down the road and decided to turn back on my radio I noticed my sound was messed up. The left driver side speaker has no highs. I get to my house, hook up my old amp and still no highs. Took off my door panel and noticed that the tweeter is not playing at all. How can I troubleshoot what is wrong with the speakers? I smelled them and they don't smell burnt. The woofer sounds ok. These are Diamond Audio 6.5 Hex components. I have a multimeter and a pack of beer.

Get a cold one, put multimeter on ohms and measure tweeter resistance (better to disconnect it from wires). And, my advice, sell this amp, and keep 400a4, it is a very solid amp with plenty of power for components to make you deaf.

Sounds like life > you right now. I would let Kicker whats up and make them eat some shit. If they did a shoddy repair job that ended up damaging your equipment, then they should at least repair the amp free of charge... and if they were really awesome they would send you a pair of KS80's... lol.
