Yup, the newer ones are nice and pretty cheap.

Trying to talk her into an HHR too, front wheel drive is fine for the snow/ice when we get it here occasionally. They are cheap just a year or two old too. My only worry is she isnt the best driver so a lower vehicle might get fukd up easier :/

I love mine and it isnt to big but yet is big enough to fit 5 people. Gets ~25 mpg with 22s and system so it must do better w/o.. I would definetly look into this.. Be sure to at least get 2005 up because earlier models were notorious for transmission problems

I drive a Scion XB which a lot of people hate the look but you would be surprised with the room inside plus 30+ mpg it really is not a bad little car. Another one I would look at is the Honda CRV though I am not sure what year you would get for that.

Yup, I have a friend that is a ford tech, heard about the transmission issues on the older ones. The escape's seem to keep their value better than the explorers for some reason

Thats another option too, I've driven one and again a good value car. Mileage is a plus too. With the new body style out hopefully the old body style prices are cheap

About to go check the scion dealer just to see what they have used. I feel better about the longevity of a scion than an hhr.
