Good speakers?

Hey guys, i was looking at upgrading my door speakers from my alpine type-r's.

I was going to put the alpine r's in the back doors, and putting a set of alpine type-x components in the front doors, with around 80w rms going to them.

The i saw that kenwood is taking a stab at making decent door speakers, with the 25th anniversary XXV-04S's.

The last speaker i've been looking at are jl's top of the line ZR650's.

Anyone know how these three speakers stack up against each other with said rms power going to each?

The alpines were my top choice, but now i'm unsure, since jl's have a good rep, and the kenwoods are looking pretty good too.

Well, a while ago, when i first decided i wanted new speakers, i was looking at diamonds, and the dls iridium 6.3's.

Lots of people told me diamonds weren't all they're cracked up to be, especially for the money, and the iridiums are crazy hard to find in the 3-way configuration.

So, i'd be interested to know how the 6.3's would stack up against the speakers above that i was interested in.

Thanks!

If you buy Diamonds, buy the Hex's and go active. Otherwise they're not being used at all to their potential. Are you trying for a 3 way system or a 2 way?

At this point, i'm really impartial either way to a 2-way or a 3-way.

I'm confused about the iridium 3-ways, because their frequency range lacks compared to most 2-way setups. Are they just geared more toward playing the frequency range you can actually HEAR cleaner?

What do you mean about going 'active?' Active crossover? Is that a function of the speakers, an aftermarket crossover, or the amp? And how much $$ would i be looking at for a set of Hex's?

i dont know what you are talking about? if you go to the dls website it actaully states that the set, which is broken out into three speakers, will cover the from 55hz -25khz.

active means with an active xover, you are correct sir. an active xover can be found in the HU, with an external active xover and the amp. but there are very few amps that is able to bandpass the mids, which is necessary if you want clean sound.

I've heard both the 2-way and 3-way. The 3-way sounds better at higher volume (duh) and the drivers blends in better. the 2-way I heard, I could distinguish the tweeter from mids and vice versa. With the 3-way the transition between each driver was smooth. You can't go wrong with either set, but if you can't probably utilize the 3-way, it'll sound worse than the 2-way

$250 alpine type r's (35 - 30k Hz)

$450 alpine type x's (35Hz - 60kHz)

$999 kenwoods (30 - 25k Hz)

That's what i was referring to, not trying to nit pick.

my 40 dollar comps pwn the type r's.....IMO the type r tweeter is harsh to ears.....not as bad as the type s...but still harsh....my powerbase's have Great SQ and a very smooth tweeter for the price.....

great pick if your on a budget

I wish everyone had the same ears, so speakers wouldn't be so subjective.

My local alpine dealer doesn't carry the type-x's, i think they're order only.

Nobody on the planet has the kenwood comp's, because everyone's scared off by kenwood's crappy base-models, so i can't hear those.

And i don't know any stores that sell the iridiums, and don't have any friends that are serious into car audio, they spend all their money on crappy city weed to smoke while they listen to their boss amps and kicker knock-off subs with their factory door speakers.

Anyone have links to professional reviews of any of these speakers? I can get 100 different opinions from 100 different people and still no know until i can hear each of the speakers, and that would be an expensive undertaking without any local dealers.

yeah i wish people had the same ears too....most people i know have WAY to much highs going on and not enough mid range/midbass, audiobahn is EVERYONES main concern here....its audiobahn, volfenhag, or sony and shit like that....and i hate to say it i cant listen to that shit lol....i've been thru so many setups in the past 6 months....and im still looking for sumthing to suit my needs, so my advice to you is, dont go and buy sumthing unless you know for sure its what you want lol...if i had HALF the money i had whenever i started putting a system in my truck, with my knowledge now it would be FLAWLESS (to me), just dont jump on sumthing because it looks cool and everyone else has it....get what you like so you can acheive the sound your looking for.
