took my 89 Jeep grand wagoneer into the shop a while back and had him do some work to it. Told him no rush, just want it back before the snow hits. Picked it up the other day and it seems to run good. Started right up at 0 degrees this morning after being -13 the night before.

Cost me $605 for:

carb kit

choke pull off

oil filter / change plus lube the chassis

drain/fill anti freeze

plugs & wires

cap / rotor

timing

fuel filter

diaphragm

He originally rebuilt my own carb and messed with it a ton before deciding it had a hairline crack he couldn't see when the carb was cold and apart on the bench. So the $605 included the cost of getting a used carb and rebuilding it too.

Good deal? Rip off? About fair?

ya i know he had WAY more labor into it than he billed me for.. he messed around trying to make my old carb work for a long time... i think he didnt want to be defeated by it, but finally gave up and got a different one.

i have an appointment with the exhaust shop on Monday.. i know thats not gonna be cheap.. i pretty much have nothing from the manifold back.,.

even if the exhaust cost me $600, i'd still have less than $2K total into it and it's got less than 100K.

The inside isn't pristine, but it's clean... leather interior, power everything and even the AC works.

Locking F/R differentials, quadra trac, and dana 44 axles mean i like it in the winter.

We'll see how it pans out and if i end up getting a few winters out of the money i'm dumping into it..... or if it was a big waste and a huge money pit....

there have been times when i certainly missed the fo-fo.

I considered buying a new-er-ish car last spring but decided to hold off.

I couldn't even decide if i wanted a comfortable car with decent mileage or an SUV that will go through anything.

I was looking at Avalon or exL-6 accords or FJ cruiser or jeep grand Cherokee ..

If i was looking today, instead of lying in bed on dilaudid and Valium, i'd consider a new-er-ish Buick too, if the price was nice.

I would totally try and i have most of the tools i just dont have a 'go to guy' to ask questions and i was too nervous about the carb. Turns out it's a good thing i didnt try to rebuild it myself, because it drove the mechanic crazy before he got a new carb.

I dont doubt i could do it, i have the tools and the space, i just wish this was 10 years ago when my gramps would have been all about helping me. He still offered to help me at 86 years old, but i said no.

He just cant get under the hood or under the chassis like he used to, although he still tries whenever i use his garage to change oil or do stereo stuff. He is pretty spry though, two years ago he designed and built a big deck over his back patio.

He didnt want to have to go up or down the stairs to sit outside and listen to the ball game on the radio or grill a steak. he drew up his plans, got a permit, and personally picked all the lumber to build a deck constructed better than most houses at 84 years old. Me and my uncle helped him with it some, but it was all his project.

It's not a HUGE deck, but its good sized. Enough for a monstrous Weber grill, a double swing chair, a patio set, a few other chairs and a couple of those giant plastic storage closets.

So while it started out about a jeep, this thread is dedicated to my grandpa.

so i have no exhaust, like it just is gone from the manifold back... i think even the Y pipe is fucked, but i am hoping the manifolds good.

I have an appointment with the exhaust shop on Monday. I decided to rip off the catalytic converter before going into the shop. It was literally not hooked to anything, just hanging by some coat hangers.

the exhaust shop cant make me put a catalytic converter or any of that emissions **** back on can they?

I think i can take it off myself, and they dont have to put it back on.... but i dont think they can take it off for me; if it's there they have to save/replace it. does that sound right?

i wish they'd just do straight pipes all the way back, but i think they'll at least make use a cheap glass pack. I just want it as cheap as possible and thought i could save some cash without a catalytic converter.

Besides i already ripped off all the other emissions junk and no matter what a 5.9liter Jeep is not a 'green' vehicle no matter how much useless stuff they add to it.

what do you think of my logic??
