Any cheap pair of bookshelf two or 3 way speakers will work assuming you have something to drive them or they are powered. I use a $20 car audio two channel amp, a pair of 10+ yr old sony 3 way monitors with a 5" driver, and a 150w pc power supply. I can hear clean down to 35hz or so relatively flat with them.

Why not use the Yamaha speakers?
What kind of music are you mixing? I got the feeling it was bass/rap/dance.

Those alesis are fine, (if it all works it's a great deal) but not for bass. Like I said, you're not going to be happy with the bass output of any 6" speaker.

You have an amp, then just get the best 10"-12" passive speakers you can afford. $300 will get you something decent.
I just need something so I can tell the difference between a 35 and 40hz tone...or even be able to hear it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif I can't hear shit on these built-in 1" full range speakers.

The Yamaha's are decent. I've used the in my room for gaming a few years ago. They're a little big for sitting on top of my table though; I definitely wouldn't want anything bigger.

HEADPHONES!!!!!! A decent set of cans will perform as well or better than speakers 10x the price.
Good idea. I've never been a fan of headphones, but it'll definitely be good to use in the morning so as not to wake up the wifey...and to not annoy her in the afternoon.

good studio monitors under 150 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif
Just need something that'll give me some bass, nothing fancy.

i'd get
a pair of these or a pair of these

and one of these

not quite $150, but still under $4-500
Still more than what I'm wiling to spend...I'm willing to buy used as well. I've been checking craigslist and I can grab some M-Audio BX8's NIB for $300. But I just really don't need something that expensive since I'm just getting started.

What headphones do you suggest? I found these locally: http://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/ele/1052306757.html
$200 retail, and the cheapest I can find on ebay is $115 shipped...so $75 seems like a good deal. I can probably get him down to $60.
Sony MDR-V6. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif

They have been around forever but you still can't beat em (for the price).

I'd say set up the Yamaha's and get those, or similar headphones. Sennhizers HD10's or Sony pro MDR-7506's, etc. Spend some money on them. Get new if your not sure. That way you can use the Yamaha's for normal listening and the headphones for refrence.

holy hell rashaddd. that it pure win

Yeah, I'll probably set up the Yamaha's with a little 2 channel amp, and grab these headphones: http://cgi.ebay.com/Sennheiser-HD280-Pro-Headphones-HD-280-Black-BRAND-NEW_W0QQitemZ270360999189QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item270360999189&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50

I've been reading some good reviews on them...kinda torn between them and the Denon D1001K.
