it refers to delegating your speakers crossover points and equalization slopes though a system that can be adjusted by the end user rather than a set of parimiters that are defined and most likely not able to be changed by any degree more than minor attenuation of a set eq slope.

i.e. the little box that comes with the components you bought, versus your headunits crossover capabilities.... or even your amps.
