Going active on a budget

I still really dig my older Pioneer deck, but I have been looking at buying a 9835 or 9887. However, I am on a tight budget. I can probably only spend about $100 on an external EQ/crossover. I have the PG RSD65CS set and I just want to clean up some harshness.

Should I save for an HU or just go with an external EQ?

I really don't know much about external sound processors, so what brands should I look into? Doesn't have to be in-dash.

If anyone could steer me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it.

When I go active I just plan on picking up another amp and a new HU, probably eclipse 7100.
