glassing foam: part 2 (w/pics)

all of these suggestions are great.... But I still would have started out with a wood (MDF to be exact) skeleton. You would have needed a lot less glass and bondo that way.

req? what do you say?

I though about it before I started with the foam. It would be just too complex, too many angles to cut. And it wouldn't of been the look I wanted. What you think would work better for you may not work better for me.

I'm conmfident It'll come out fine in the end.

Well I finished laying most of the bondo and got started on some of the sanding and thought I'd share the pics.

Here it is after putting the bondo on.

And after some sanding.

I'm about 1/3 way do with sanding, but I won't be able to finish till next week because I work all weekend.

I think the gaps filled in nicely and it will come out looking not too bad. Actually, I should have just skipped the fiberglass layer. It was a wast of time, money, etc. but at the time I thought I needed it. Oh well...

Good trick for glassing foam, after you have made the mold out of foam, spread a thin layer of bondo across the entire surface, and then apply glass/resin. The fiberglass won't eat into the bondo.

But....the bondo will eat through the foam just as the resin did most likely...

Either way though, looking MUCH better, it's going to turn out for you after all //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

well, depending on how you want the curvature to come out, starting with foam is a good idea, and this way you can get the contour to the ****** hump down well too...

because if he did wood - the side would be flat and it would have been a PITA to fill in all those little curves at the top.

i wish theyd make an expandable foam MEANT for fiberglassing - that would kick MAJOR ***.

seeing that fiberglass resin is just epoxy, and bodyfiller is epoxy, i can venture to guess that it will still eat the foam.
