Girlfriend car

I suggest an IRA.... and mutual funds are for lazy people. Real investors don't use mutal funds. You can still mitigate risk without fooling with a mutual fund or an index fund. However, if you just want to put money away without much homework, then mutual funds are a pretty safe bet.
Well I'm not necessarily lazy, but I want something safe. I've never invested into anything but everyone's telling me that because I have money and because I'm young that I should start. Any advice on that is welcome, thanks bro!

Just like caraudio, it depends on what your preferences are. higher risk, high expected return.

How safe? Currently, the i-bond pays around 6.7% (it is indexed to the interest rate, will go down if rate goes down) A good part is that there are no transaction costs. bad part is you have to hold for 5 years.

etf are alse pretty good. They work like mutual funds except you can have a smaller minimum investment because they trade like stock. I own a few in biotech and nano-tech because it is hard to determine which of the companies will come out with something revolutionary. Also allows investment in foreign countries with limited risk.

If you feek pretty risky, you can get into options, which is what I do. You either hit a homerun or you strike out. Occasionally a grand slam, occasionally tear an ACL kinda of deal. My other portion is in small caps...basically small companies that do one or two things, hoping one hits it big.

I would reccomend you invest in segments with etfs. The transaction costs are a little higher than a straight mutual fund but allows for diversification into segments of the market. Say, you wanted to focus on nasdaq tech stocks ---QQQQ is an etf that holds a weighted portion of the nasdaq 100. The Dow Jones Industrials -- DIA holds equal weights of all 30 dow jones companies...yahoo.finance.com could show a lot more about etfs. Without strong accounting and finance background or sheer nerve I wouldn't suggest investing in single stocks.

If you have anymore questions, PM me. I won't give any stock tips because I can't tell the future. I have no idea what stock will go up or down tomorrow, but I can tell you if I feel it is under or overvalued.

I'm going to admit that I haven't read all of this thread, actually, only the first page.

Here is my advice. DO NOT buy - or makes payments for "a few months" - on a car for your girlfriend. You are not even 16 years old, and you will later look back to realize the waste of money it was.

I dated a girl for 2 and a half years in high school, and continued for another year in college. Now we're broken up, despite how PERFECT things seemed for the first 2+ years, or all the talk of marriage. I also feel it's important to mention that I have at least 5 friends who had relationships that surpased the year mark in high school...NONE of them are still with their "long-term" mates. Just throwing that out...I know it's depressing to think about, and you want to prove the world wrong, which is great - but chances are you will not end up with this girl in the long run.

Things change, and when you're in high school: living at home, being supported by parents, there is absolutely no reason to drop a ton of cash on a girlfriend who is also living at home. Money becomes more scarce and valuable when you're forced to live on it...and any that you can save now will help you in the future.

My .02

Also, my parents are pretty much just like hers. for example, they own one of the most succesful restaraunts/bar/nightclubs on the island. my dad just bought a fully loaded 2005 f150 and my mom has a 99 accord, i'm 15 right and we started looking for a car right. so i start looking for a car/truck around like 10k and they tell me that they will spend $2500 plus whatever i want to spend. sorry, what i just typed was so stupid so um yah. nevermind.
