Getting a shop to install things that you did not buy from them?

If you bring in your own equipment, the shop installs it and then it is not working (regardless if you bought it new or used) you are most likely going to blame it on the install or when it does break you will come back and expect it to be fixed for free which is going to tie up install bays and force the shop to loose money.

Why not try and find a member from here in NJ that will install for you?
well mostly because if a person installs it for you vs a store, you usually won't have any type of binding warranty for their labor or anything. And if a store installs it and messes something up with your car, they are completely responsible. If i just pay a person to install it and somethign breaks, if they don't feel like paying for it, i would have to sue them to get the money, and it doesn't seem worth it.

Ummm, sounds like you are F'ed. You really have 3 choices- get off of your @$$ and teach yourself to do it yourself, pay a shadetree installer to do it for you and roll the dice that he does not F something up, or overpay (versus their "normal" rates) a shop to install gear that they did not sell to you.

I guess that you have a 4th option- buy new gear and pay "normal" rates for the install.

I all seriousness, I would try to get someone to help you do it. You will take better care of your own car, and you will save money, AND learn how to do it in the future. If you DO find a shop to install it, I would bet that they will make you sign a waiver absolving them of liability if they mess up your gear. They don't know how it was installed or run before...why stand behind someone else's work?

Out of pure lazyness I have Best Buy install my amps sometimes and never bought an amp from them so they may install what you need.

On another note you can do all of this stuff yourself fairly easy if you have half a brain.

Not necessarily. That only applies if that is how their install contract is worded. And like was said above- if they DO that that type of contract, that may be why their insurance or their ownership won't install hardware from another source. The benefit is not woth the liability risk, unless they charge extra.

Not true! When I worked at CC we would charge double for stuff not purchased from us. It may have just been my store's policy, but you never know. I'd say just save some dough and do it yourself. It's not hard, and if you need help we are always here.
nah it was most def the store you worked in cause all cc's around here charge the same no matter where you bought it ,THERE IS some decent installers at some cc's if you are getting SIMPLE .stuff done

I started a thread similiar to this over the summer. I didn't want to mess up my brand new car, so I was trying to find a shop to do my install for a reasonalbe price.

It didn't work out that way. Instead, I did it myself and saved $700 or so. Also, I've since re-worked, or added things to my install. If I had never learned the first time, I would've spent well over $1000 for all the installs.

Trust me, find a site/forum dedicated to your car and learn how to do your own install. Patience is key. A word of advice as well: instead of trying to lift things up out of the way, just take a good weekend off and literally strip your car. Take seats, panels, etc all out at once and set them aside. This will make the install much cleaner and much much much easier.

well i went today, and a place in NJ Called "Zippo's" quoted me 350 - 375 for the entire install ( 2 amps, head unit and components) including all necessary wiring kits and dash kit. How does that sound? It's also not a circuit city type place, it seems to just be a car audio shop.

Why make a thread if you are just going to ignore what we recommend.

How about this- you PM me with the answer that you want to hear and I will post it for you.

i personally will install whatever comes in the shop simply because i as do many installers get the majority of their pay from comission so the more work the better... i do make sure to examine the equipment first and test for functionality in front of the customer and inform them that if the product fails at no fault of the installation that its not my problem....wont do alarms that we dont sell though as testing to make sure they work would take more time then its worth also had a stupid experience doing that once so wont do it again
Word , I made most of my installing was chit we didn't even sell . I would verify functionality of all equipment before hand while the customer was present , then have the customer acknowledge the results of the testing in writing . I don't do alarms anymore period //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
