Gettin' pissed with my ISP.

Lately I've been having slow download speeds, so I called my ISP. They said, 'It must be something wrong on your part', because I was losing packets, and had an average ping time (they pinged my modem), of 450ms+. 'Well, the soonest we can have a tech. out to look at it is Feb. 3rd.' This was on January 11th. Called them last night, because it only seems to happen when there's high traffic (I'm on cable). I explained this to them, and they still said, give it 'til the 3rd. I pay for a 10mb connection, but have been gettin' about 260-800Kb. Anything I can try to remedy this problem? I know it's not a virus or anything, as I just reformatted the computer (wrote the drive with 0's).

Notice the ping.

All is fine.

by "high traffic" do you mean in your house/apt?
it is possible that your signal db is too low for whatever modem you have
its not so much based on the modem as it is the network (The cable system)

ours can run the internet from +18 all the way down to -18 DB on the docsis channel.

wont work too well, but it will work....

That is my point....it may work, but extremely slow...I have seen installations where there are 4 televisions and a cable modem off the same line, and the modem was at the end of 4 (-3 and -5 db) splitters.

signal is perfectly fine

when the tech comes ask him to run a throughput test with his meter.

-3 over 48 with an SNR of 36 is just about as good as it gets....

might have an issue with another house in the neighboorhood......or the DHCP that they use could be outdated and unable to handle all the traffic

nothing you can do about that.

I mean high traffic as in for the cable users are most likely to be on (Weekends, and after 4p.m. on weekdays).

ive never seen a -5db splitter.

but when they are installed like that, they never work properly anyway

Bitching and Whining helps sometimes.....if you can get enough people in on it:D

I'll look at it when the speeds are actually bad. Right now everything is fine, speeds are great, and I can actually use the internet.
