Gated 24hr Security Communities...

Ive lived in a gated apartment (2 different ones) for about a year and a half now. Pain in the ***. At the last one everyones wheels got jacked and their cars were left on blocks. There was even a guy sitting at the gate.
Current one, you just drive in behind someone to get in. Couldnt be more pointless to have a gate.
Why you comparing a ghetto gated apartment complex, where the gate is to keep you all in, to a gated community which is generally nice homes that people work for and own.

I'd never buy a home in one.

I don't need a gate outside to make me feel secure at night, and I certainly don't need a homeowner's association telling me what I can and can't do with my own property. Restrictive covenants ****.

I bought a condo in a gated community earlier this year. I'm happy with it, but it's only manned from normal business hours.

I personally think it's more of a nuisance than anything else, it's a pain having friends come over and having them explain to the guard, or having to call my housephone to get buzzed in.

The rules, strict restrictions, and other shit. Some of them are as strict to what color your house can be.
I'm not against it just want opinions.
You don't have to live in a gated community for this. There's a non-gated community out here (Sudden Valley) that's pretty big that has these types of restrictions. You have to check with them before painting your house and bring them a sample. They wont even let you put a blue tarp over a wood pile. It has to be black or brown.

I don't like living in a place that has high dues and lots of restrictions. The gate isn't the problem. It's the restrictions/dues of an area that make it a win or lose area for me.

Actually I wouldnt. I can live where ever I want and do what ever I want in my own house as long as its not illegal and doesnt infringe on other peoples basic rights. That includes doing what I please with my own house. If the court decided in their favor they would be breaking the very declaration the country was founded on and Id move to Canada.

Then you'd be moving to Canada.

Seriously, a deed restricted community limits you to what the whole community agrees to as far as visible aspects of the house/condo.

You own the inside.

I'd prefer to live in one. Less solicitors, less thru traffic, less chance of theft or vandalism, peaceful, no unwanted or unexpected visitors (i'm sure it could be arranged if you talked to the gate keeper).

And I don't think the rules would be much more than a non gated subdivision ya know?

If you choose to live on a big piece of property in BFE then you stand the risk of most of the stuff listed above that otherwise if you were in a gated community you wouldn't have to worry about.

whats the big deal about having a sticker in ure window?
if someone comes over, call the gate and give them a heads up.

you should be happy to live in a gated, private community. dont have to really worry about someone breaking in ure car or house for that matter
yeh u do. still got kids that live there with their parents

I'm engaged and my girl comes from a very private and secret type family, I'm just laid back and not really all that worried about shit happening because now a days anything can happen, all you have to do is be prepared...
More to the point - does anyone live in one?

There are tons of nice neighborhoods and places that are not gated but I'm skeptical about living in a fortress and having to put a sticker on my car to get in a gate every time I come and go and going through hell to have company come over.

What are your guys' thoughts?

Here's what I was reading:

my gate code is 7263 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

My friend lives in a gated community about a mile up the road from me and his system got jacked.. those gates dont make you invincible; especially if there are a bunch of shitass kids running around..

Loud3's right. The right of HOAs has been upheld many times...you sign the contract, you forfeit the chance to ignore them. Hell, it took a federal bill to have an exemption for satellite dishes when DBS started picking up in the '90s.

I agree that the gate is only a symptom of the problem - conformity makes people feel better.

My folks live on 10 acres about 20 minutes from the nearest town - in the years that I lived there, we never once had someone soliciting, never had anything stolen or vandalized, and no unwanted visitors. People just don't wander that far out.

Take basic precautions, like locking doors and having outside lights, and you're fine.

I agree. I'll NEVER live in any kind of gated community, or place with an HOA. I outright refuse to allow somebody to tell me what I can and cannot do with my property. If I want to paint pink panda's on my house, I should have the right to do so. For those of you who need the conformity and comfort of a bunch of liberal pany whipes around you doing what they're told to feel better - sucks to be you. I'm an american, I'll do what I want, when I want, with anything and everything I've earned.

FWIW, I grew up out in the country. 1 neighbor on one side, forest and horse fields everywhere else around us. Never had an incident or issue, and we rarely locked our house. Usually left the keys in the cars too. If somebody did for some reason decide to play games, my father had a loaded 12 gauge mounted under the bed with easy access in case of emergency. They wouldn't have gotten far //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Some of em here are crazy strict. You can't work on you car in your driveway(change oil etc.) , you can't keep the garage door open for long periods of time during the day. Stupid stuff like that
