gas prices? interesting

another sad thing is that everyone is buying those ugly smart cars to save some $$$ on gas. If people were smart they wouldn't drive something so ugly. And I have a feeling that some day, all cars will be that ugly just because they are more efficient.

Gas stations profit a minimum of nine cents per gallon, BTW. Usually a gas station will keep that margin as low as possible, to draw customers into the store - where they make the real money.

edit: At least three stations whose owners I've spoken with.

If people were smart, they'd drive Smart cars ...
Why ? They get 24 km/L and diesel costs about $0.92/liter whereas gasoline costs $1.07/liter ... Comparing hte annual cost to drive a Smart Fortwo and a Honda Civic each 20,000 km ...

Smart Fortwo - 4.2 L/100 km - 840 liters * 0.92 = $773

Honda Civic - 6.6 L/100 km - 1320 liters * 1.07 = $1412

As you can see, the Smart Fortwo costs about half as much to run each year. Not to mention it also qualifies for tax breaks and costs only $500 more than the Civic unlike most Hybrids which run well over $20,000 CAD.
they may have a lot of advantages on skipping the insane gas prices and other costs. But I am not convinced that they are great cars. They're ugly and small. Too small to hold groceries and anything big you may buy. The people I know with smart cars also own another vehicle just to put groceries and junk in. Paying for two vehicles when you only need one is stupid and not avoiding any costs. So those people are definetly not smart.

But yeah, I guess they are good in the right situations and with the right people

Must be a regional thing, Jmac. Here in Louisiana (and I travel it from the northern to the southern ends in the course of my job so I know it isn't a trend only in my hometown) diesel generally runs the same price or slightly higher per gallon (1 gallon = 3.78L) than premium-grade unleaded. So, all else being equal diesel-powered vehicles aren't realizing any savings at the pump.

I'm very, very glad that as I fill up the twin tanks on my work truck the $85USD+ fuel bill belongs to my boss and not me!

When gas prices hit 6-8$ a gal. I wouldn't be suprised if there was an alternative way to fill a tank.

I can't wait until electric/hydrogen or something.. hits the market. People will convert to the best/cheapest way to travel.

Gas prices may drop, may stay the same. Even out a bit just because there is an alternative way.

Dam CEO's. They should wear someones shoes that have budgets.

Remember cars were created not to long ago ~100 yrs ago. Gas is pretty much the only way to travel efficiently.

Its only the beginning, unless we get nuked.
