Garage Audio Questions

I'm new to the forum, this may or may not be the right spot for this thread. I basically want to put some speakers in my garage for when I'm doing yard work, washing car, etc. Maybe some Klipsh speakers, cuz I love the way they sound. I ultimately want like my receiver receeded in the wall which I can tackle and then wire up the speakers to that.

However, I'm not sure if they make mini-receivers? So Im guessing I'd have to use a car audio FM tuner or whatever right?

I basically want something:

  • Small
  • aux ports in front to hook up ipod or laptop for mp3's
  • something with a remote

Think thats it for now. Its a rather big project and Im not coming up much in my search with google. Plus I'm not even sure how to give this receiver power if it is a car audio deck. Any tips on this one guys?

Thanks

How you going to power home speakes off a HU since they're 8ohm?

I've got a pair of Klipsch KLF-20's for garage speakers, can hear them in ANY part of the yard when I want to.

Why not just get a cheapo 2 channel receiver with an AUX input for your ipod?

Well the problem with getting a simple 2 channel receiver is they are so big/bulky. I really want my receiver to be the size of a car audio deck one if thats even possible?

Any links are also always welcome. Thanks for the input so far..

The problem you are going to run into with a headunit is power. The home audio receivers are large because they have decent size amplifiers built into them. A lot of home audio receivers will put out 100 watts per channel or more while the car audio receivers typically put out about 10-15 watts per channel.

You have to figure that a headunit with a power supply and amplifier will end up having just as big of a footprint as the home audio receiver.

If you were to use small speakers you could get away with using an iPod as the source and possibly a small class T amp. That would be a very compact setup.
