Im going to go ahead with the big 3 upgrade. alternator to battery positive wire needs a fuse equal to the max rating of what my alternator can pump out. now the question is if im going for 160A alternator is it ok to give it 180? how much over or less can the fuse be rated? and then ill probably use a anl fuse, so do i need an ANL fuse holder?

uh yes....... use a fuse rated higher than the output of the alt.

Keep in mind though you don't want to go too high above the alt max. If there is a problem and you have a very HIGHLY rated fuse that doesn't blow you'll have fire on your hands. I think you'll be fine with a 180 but don't go any higher.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I got a 95 honda civic coupe that I just did the BIG 3 on. Our main fuse box sucks because there is no room to wire the BIG 3 in the fuse box. So I just wired straight to the battery from the alternator and fused that wire.

you should fuse to the wire size... 250-300A for 1/0 wire.
I always thought you fused by the amperage being drawn. I know when I fused my audio system under the hood next to the battery I fused it by the amperage rating of the system, NOT the size of the wire.

Well, inline fuses are meant to protect the wire. If your wire is large enough to easily support the max current draw your appliance will draw in the case of a short or high demand situation, then you can fuse for the appliance. That would only add for extra safety in protecting the appliance, and it would also protect the wire still.
