That is common knowledge. If the wire burns, your vehicle burns, it's primary function is to protect the wire though. Also, you do not always lose the vehicle if your wire burns up...

Well, inline fuses are meant to protect the wire. If your wire is large enough to easily support the max current draw your appliance will draw in the case of a short or high demand situation, then you can fuse for the appliance. That would only add for extra safety in protecting the appliance, and it would also protect the wire still.
