Full Range setups

Ive been looking around to building a nice home system just for music. To tell you the truth I have been doing a lot research on building crossovers and perhaps its not for me yet. I was looking at Zaph's kit and other kits with the pre-made xover's but I'm anal enough to not buy them for the sake of having wanting this to be 100% made by me //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif I ain't looking for the best sound just something that is acceptable and is made by me (im not overwhelmingly picky).

Thats the backstory. Ive been looking into Chang's variant of the BIB using Pioneer's Bofu full range driver mated with a cheap tweeter in the phase plug or some other config. The enclosure will probably be these guys. They look good and are fairly simple to construct.

My question is do fullrange "systems" have a significantly different sound to them than other more conventional 2-3 way systems? Coming down for the holiday's i listened to my parents 19 year old polk speakers and i loved how much detail came out of such a soft sound. Could they have such a warm and detailed sound while covering such a wide frequency spectrum?

Come over and listen to mine //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif I have the same basic setup, it's still very crippled, I need to upgrade my amp, remove the wizzer, add phase plugs, treat the cone, and a few other things, but you can get the same basic idea of what the Changs will sound like, I am running the BOFUs in the Half-Chang...

This is assuming you are in SLO currently

I must warn you, they are ugly, the finishing was a disaster (long story), I need to sand down some of the imperfections and refinish them...

Single driver speakers often do sound better. They tend to have better imaging and a more open soundstage since the sound comes from only a single point. But there are also tradeoffs with full range designs since a single speakers has to handle the entire frequency range.

Thank you for that. Thats exactly what i was thinking of. Well I'm glad for the input because I want to try out this cheap solution with at least an idea that i most likely will be happy with.

In addition, the added distortion running smaller drivers down really low. However, since you are going with 8s, this is not a real big issue...
I am confident if you mod the BOFUs they will be true audiophile sounding full range drivers...Right now they sound great for everyday listening, wouldn't call them terribly detailed though...

For the price they are awesome, nothing in its price range that competes with it. I'm sure the current amplifier and room isn't helping too much either in my situation...

Just to get an idea how big is your room and what are you powering it with? The combined RMS rating for both of those drivers i selected is only about 70 watts. I'm some what excited to hear them now //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

I live in a apartment, the living room and kitchen combined is probably about 15x25 feet, the Bass is more than adequate in here...I am using a Pioneer SA-7100, puts out around 20rms per channel...What i love about it is its not fatiguing at all, you can really crank the thing and not even notice how loud it is until someone tries to speak //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif Again, not the most detailed, but I can listen for hours...

My vote's for the Fostex Sigma series //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif
Short of a Lowther, they're hard to beat...
Need to start at the bottom and work your way up //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Bah, where's the fun in that...//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I justify it because for the price they want, it'd be nigh on impossible to beat them with anything crossover-ed for that price //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
