Frustrated!!!!

FINAL REPORT!!!

I spoke with mike and we decided that i would drive down to La Jolla(45 min drive) and return my subs for a brand spanking new set. I got off of work and got down there around 4:45. I spoke with the guy that was there(not mike) and of course he wanted to ensure that the ones i had were indeed bad. I showed him how the cone crackles when you tap on one side, but not the other and he said that no woofer can be built perfectly and that there was nothing wrong with that. He mentioned something about the magnets being really close to something or tight fitting, or something to that effect. So then we free-aired them on his machine and both had a nasty resonance at 90hz but he also said this was normal. They got a wee bit poppy, not too bad, around 60hz but they would still (he said) pass inspection. I offered to pull out a cvr and install one to show him exactly what i was talking about. He agreed so i went out to the parking lot and installed a SS in one side and a cvr in the other. My box is chambered so we could do a one on one comparison. I played a bass track and let him watch the SS max out and start popping. He said it was being pushed VERY hard even though it is only seeing 320watts. I then play the kicker for him and i turn the volume up another 7 notches past where the SS dies and the kicker just gets louder and stronger. I played a few other songs and let him watch as the cvr ate up the SS . I looked at him puzzled and he explained that the rubber on the SS surround is softer so it will reach max excursion before the kicker would. I told him that i was told the SS was a far superior speaker in every aspect and he said there was no doubt that the SS was a much better speaker. He said the design of the kicker won't allow it to bottom out but the SS will. I asked "so this is what to expect from sound spinter?" He said no but could offer no other explanation. He asked me to drive down again next week to try and work something out. I gave him my info and went home empty handed. I honestly just don't get it. This speaker has a hard on status on his board but just doesn't perform. Ok, so it has a deeper tone at low volumes but so what. As soon as you get to even a medium "i like this song" volume, you have to worry about it falling apart on you. The part that aggravates me is that i spent over $700 to get some nice SQL subs in a custom box to replace my fosgate stage 2's and now i am right back where i started. I am tired of the hassle and won't be driving back down there.

Realm of excursion will be receiving videos of two free air rl-i 10's getting about 800 rms each playing late night tip.

Kurt, did you leave the woofers there at the facility? Whether or not the buildhouse stated that the woofer is covered holds no baring, as I operate independent of their operation. Believe me, I have already ended up paying the full recone price on woofers that I have covered for free for my customers - that's just the way the business goes. Many of the larger manufacturers try to get out of woofer repairs even if there is obviously something wrong in the construction. Nonetheless, I always make it my aim to invest in my customers if I feel they have been dealt a bad hand. If the buildhouse makes me pay for a woofer that I think failed from their error, I will absorb the repair costs and my customers will not be held responsible for the charges.

I just want to make this clear so that you don't think you're sh1t outta luck based on what they told you down in La Jolla. I will still send you two new RL-i10's under warranty as we have discussed. If you did end up walking away with the woofers as it sounds you did, please ship them directly to me and I will have your replacements shipped out immediately. Though I have had one other RL-i10 fail in the same manner as yours, this is indeed not a normal occurance as I'm sure many happy RL-i users can tell you... users who are using 300-500 watts in similar sized boxes, without the negative effects you have experienced.

Please email me as soon as you read this and let me know if and when you will be shipping the woofers back to me. I apologize on behalf of the build house for your experience.. I did email their top management yesterday to inform them you would be dropping off the two woofers and specifically requested that they be held for me until I can come down there and personally inspect them. I only wish I could've been there to ensure you weren't given the run around but I just didn't have a chance to make the 2 hour drive today. I am sorry that you have had to deal with the trouble //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif .. but I will do what I can to set it straight.

Yea, something sounds weird if a) he stated it was a better driver than the Comp VR, but it will bottom out faster than that 10" off 320 watts... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

Oh well, sounds like Mike is doing his best to get you covered. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Hey mike,

I took them back with me because he didn't request that i leave them. I really appreciate YOUR excellent service regarding this matter but i don't think that soundsplinter can deliver what i am looking for. I need something to be significantly better than a kicker cvr and fosgate stage 2 with 300rms and .65 per sub. From the way he sounded, it seemed that although my subs weren't exactly up to par with the regular standards, they were close enough to pass. Once again, YOUR service and prompt responses are as good as it gets but i'm not going to take you up on your offer since i feel as though i am setting myself up for disappointment. Thanks again for the excellent customer service.

No problem Kurt - I'm sorry things turned out this way. Keep in mind my other offer in the email (the one that doesn't require you to keep using SS woofers //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif ). There is no question that the RL-i series 10 & 12" speakers are not SPL oriented drivers, afterall their roots lie in being a reference woofer for home theater use. However, for the average listener they do offer excellent sound quality and still get pretty **** loud (yours being an exception due to an admittedly imperfect construction that prevented you from driving them to their full potential).

Perhaps in the future you might revisit my company as I am strongly considering introducing an RL-p10 for those people who really want to gain maximum output from a 10" woofer. Unfortunately, this will likely not come into fruition until the Fall at the earliest. If I do end up walking this route, I will offer you a discount on account of your prior history with my company so just let me know.

Take care, and good luck getting your system just the way you like it. Don't feel too bad - trial and success is great, but trial and error helps us learn too! Don't forget to email me if you'd like to send back those woofers

you ought to at least set up a time w/ mike and get some new drivers in there if it doesn't take care of the problem then so be it. but i believe that they should out prefom the cvr's.

For the record, I know that they have the potential to outperform CVR's from my own experience //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/up2something.gif.dd110ecf3ae4b76050d87598f2f8de7c.gif

But on the other hand, what with all the hassle Kurt's been through - I can totally understand his decision.

no, u got dealt a bad pair. IME, the rl-i's are stronger, by a bunch, then the cvr's. i have ran 1700 wrms to my rl-i 8 (yes gains were set conservitely), and only bottomed it out when i upped the settings on the hu and amp.

i think u should at least try a different pair of rl-i 10's before completely stepping away from SS. i understand ur issues and ur feelings, but a second chance isn't that much to ask. if ur still unhappy, well, mike has made a pretty decent attempt at correcting it.

in the end, it's totally up to u, but i think ur walking away from something that, if u'd gotten drivers without issues, would make u more then happy. (unless ur just after all out spl) SS hasn't gotten this good rep for nothing, including correcting bad experiences.

wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/peace.gif.2db28b618ed8d1964ebbe2f5021d2c39.gif

I only have about 320 going to each cvr and i can pound on them all day with no problems. Like mike said, trial and error. I learned my lesson.
Sounds like the do out perform, in this case...I think the VR's will fit you bill....good luck in whatever you decide. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
