not necessarily... you just change the resistance...

when you push on the cone and you hear a grinding noise thats not good. Good chance somthing is seriously messed up. And hooking up the coils opposite is bad if you leave it that way for a while.

if you dont push dead center you can cause the coils to rub also... so that always isnt the best way to test it out... hook it to a DMM and see if the coils are still good or not.

if you wire the coils out of phase with each other, then hell yes they can blow, very easily at that. if youve got the thing wired up backwards, - and + backwards on the amp, then the sub is wired out of phase. It probably wouldnt blow like that though.

well i had the same problem with my Rtype 12' and it is blown. the coil is rubbing against the inside and that is a no good thing.
