You have to bear in mind that it was understood that the OP would have personally benefited when he advertised for said company the first time. That is where the no-no came into play. I can post a review about a company good or bad, link to their site, etc etc all day long. There are one of two conditions that have to be met first: 1. The company needs to have paid vendor rights on here or 2. I stand to have no personal gain from said company doing better. If either (or both) of those conditions are met, it's cool for me to say all kinds of wonderful things about them and how you can get them.
However, if those conditions are not met, then what keeps me from making a bunch of random alternate accounts and spamming these forums with "reviews" about a product to increase its sales? Nothing. It is nearly impossible for a review, or product suggestion to not be biased when you personally benefit from it. You tend to even suggest products when they don't match up to the application. Granted this isn't always the case, but that is why the mods have these rules in place. They are trying to save you (the consumer) from having been fed unaware advertising.
There should be no exceptions to the rules, otherwise you end up in grey-area ville and it gets hard to find a place to draw the line. Madness ensues, people get mad, rules have to change. The way it is currently may not please everyone, but it does protect the average consumer. There are no two bones about it.
