Free Air Install?

OK I am installing a system in my 1976 BMW. Its got room in the rear deck for an 8" sub. The trunk is COMPLETELY sealed from the interior. The rear wall is used for chassis stiffness...kind of a unibody design. BUT I am reading that its not the best sound. I do not want to install boxes or other stuff if I dont have to, I am trying to keep the additional weight to a minimum, its also a fun canyon carver and weight is bad for performance. So whats the best way to install a nice system in the car with a sub? Thanks.

thats infinite baffle, not freeair, and will sound amazing if done right.

you're gonna need a shitload of deadener, possibly some added support for the deck... you want to get rid of anything that will move, flex, or leak air, and literally turn your trunk into the box.

I don't know of any speakers that are used "free air" - to me, that term implies there's absolutely nothing affecting the sound around the driver.

The closest would be open baffle, where the front and back wave are allowed to mix, but even then, the baffle the speaker is mounted on has an impact on low frequency extension (which is why OB baffles are often hideously big and hinged).
