the old one or the new? the old one had a quirky yamaha designed motor that was ok, but had inherent problems.
ummm... there isnt a new one, the third gen taurus was the last to have the SHO nameplate.

also, all of them had yamaha engines in them. the first and second gen had 6 cylinder yamahas in them that were torquey little motors. the third gen had an 8 cylinder yamaha motor that was less potent than the 6 cylinder versions. the 6 cylinder versions were VERY well engineered and made good power with what they had, the 8 cylinders have a few issues. in particular, the cam sprockets often need to be welded

the 4th gen taurus's have the optional duratec motor, thats the 24v 4 cam version of the 3l 6 cylinder, but they are not SHO's. and thats another potent engine, but not designed by yamaha. it has 10 less pounds of torque, and about the same difference in Hp as the 8 cyl yamaha designed motor, to tell you how inefficient the 8 cyl SHO's were.

Hoss can attest that his 4'th gen would pull just as hard as my GSR'd Del Sol on the highway. We never tested it from a dead stop but 2'nd gear in my Del Slow pulled pretty hard.

Moral of the story is don't mess with a DOHC Taurus. That "granny-mo-bile" will own you. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

We had a '98 Explorer for 4 years with the recalled Firestones and we managed to end the lease without even changing those..... even though they were pretty bald.

The other was a '99 Ranger with 60k on it when we sold it and my '01 Mustang. Never had to use the warranty on them or anything.

The past 3 Fords we had never had to be fixed. As long as you service em regularly they hold up quite well....
same story here.

lets see, my first vehicle, 92 explorer, bought brand new, went to 280k miles(within less than 10 years...) and since i was a 16yo moron and drove the tires off it the weak link gave, and the ****** went. $550 fix, sold for $5k

my 97 explorer, the red one on SI's vehicle page //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif , it had just shy of 200k miles on it when we traded it in after 6 years.

my 03 taurus has 70k miles on it so far and still goes strong.

oh yeah, no problems with any of those fords, except the ****** on the 92. but i was asking for that one...
