well i was talking to one of my uncles and hes been wanting to open up an audio shop for a while so im wondering how hard is it to open up..about how much money is needed to start equipment wise? and is it hard to become an authorized dealer for some of the bigger brands like JL? any info is greatly appreciated. thanks guys

To start off, your uncle may want to simply be linked with a distributor. Manufacturer buy-ins are typically too expensive for starting businesses. B/w capital, tools, material, you may struggle the first couple of months.

i want to start 1 of these myself.. but nothin too big just to run my small town and take the business from the shops sellin equipment at msrp.. i paid 300 for my cvrs to come home and find them for 150 on ebay //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif .. and i want to do installations to

Contact distributors for your mid-level brands...

A few direct companies to look at would be Memphis, Kicker, Eclipse, and Alpine (alpine can be had through distributors as well as kicker, but there are still buy-ins, and its better to go directly to the manufacturer when you can...better CS)

Opening up a shop is a lot of cash...

the list goes on and on.

If/when I open my own shop...I would want to have at least a couple hundred thousand on hand for opening capital.

You might want to invest your money in another idea. Honestly. Unless yoiu plan on making your money doing custom installs, because there isnt much in sales. When you get your first dealer pricing and find that it is the same or more than the same products on ebay, it is gonna really shock you. You will have to mark those prices up to get a good margin to keep the doors open. It is hard to sell for 40% more than online prices, but thats what your overhead will dictate. I would try to find brands that are protected from online sales, but even then the stuff still find its way to ebay. It is very hard, and you will have to hear "I can get it for such and such online, Im not paying that, you are trying to rip me off" as the customer walks out everyday. You cannot sale at dealer cost or less and keep the doors open no matter what brands you carry //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

^^^ what he said..

Unless you or your uncle have a reputation for car audio in your local area then you'll quickly discover that this isn't an easy business. In even a small 2000sq ft floorplan I would estimate that you would require at least 100K in capital to build out your store, have the equipment necessary, and inventory. '

Even if your uncle (or you) had that kind of cash laying around then you would need to find competent installers to work for you. EVERYONE thinks they can wire an amp, but I'm sure most can agree that it isn't always as easy as these forums make it out to be. Your investment can go sour quick, especially since you are in California.

Alpine is really strict on who they choose to authorize, and the same can be said for Eclipse. Memphis is questionable and Kicker can be had by anyone with the right connection.

$100K in capital is a bare minimum. A retail shop isn't cheap to operate on a daily basis.

Just a question. If your dealer cost for a XX brand XX model amp is $200(plus shipping depending on your order size and quarterly buy-in), what do you think you would sell it for. Now remember these amps can be had on ebay new for 190 plus shipping. You are gonna have to deal with that delimma. What would you do to convince people to buy from you? I got into this business because I love it, but the internet makes it very hard. So, again, what would you sell that amp for:) ?

I could easily open a show in this shithole town in the next few years...

but I dont want to live in this shit hold town after going to college for 4-6 years majoring in physics. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

anyone else got info on how to open up shop
After owning several shops , I can give you some advice : Do it right , or donn't even try it.

To do it right , you will almost HAVE to have some protected lines. To get these , you will need to buy in , which takes some serious money. If you do not have protected lines , you will be constantly trying to make sales over the guy who walks in saying " I can get that same thing on Ebay " , and he'll be talking about $10 over your cost !! You can't make it like that.

You will also need some business references, or at least good credit history. Otherwise , you will have tp pay up-front for all of the equipment , tools , ect ....

For a reasonably good estimate , plan on needing about $250,000 just getting your doors opened. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
