focal 165KF Distortion on 100 Watts?

I just bought an amp for these speakers. Eclispe EA4000. When I turn it up too loud, which isnt that loud, the midbass gets distorted.

There is a "break in" period where u r suppose to play med volume. After the break in period will I be able to crank it up all the way, with minimal distortion?

Where do you have the amplifier's gain set...

2/3 the way up. I dont think the amp would be the cause, i played around with the gain setting a little bit, and this is the best sounding so far.

Should the gain be low for break in period. I start to distort at 50 at level 25/62.

I am a noob for sure, but ill learn maybe

Don't worry about break in, worry about why you aren't getting the clean, undistorted output you want...

How are you crossovers set?

I have the HPF set to 50

my subs run anything lower

Turn the HPF up a bit...try around 70Hz. And set it to a steeper slope if you can, such as 24dB/octave.

i have the following options.

50, 63, 80

should i try 80?

run LPF 100 ?

what do you mean by the slope thing. I = Noob

And

I wil have less mid bass distortion b/c of raising the HPF, but am i really getting the full potential of my speakers? Or dos that matter b/c I have a sub.

I am going to run at an undistorted rate for a few weeks. Naybe after the 'run in' period they would not distort as much at higher volumes?

lower the gains bro.......if u have a decent enough preamp voltage from your head unit you wont need your gains up much at all. hell i have 4 volts going into my memphis door speaker amp and i only have to havet he gains up less than a quater of a way to get full output.....set your head unit at the volume you want the set the gain starting from low (pratically off) and raise it until you speakers are reaching thier limits and almost distorted, then bring it backa notch....i bet you you need to turn the gain own and thatll fix your distortion problem, or else you going to have some friend focals on your hands //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Up your HPF on them to 80hz or 100hz. 50hz is (way) too low for those 6.5's to play loudly.

Don't worry about the break in period. Some people believe a speaker needs some time to "break in" so that it sounds it's best, although this is controversial and not everyone believes a break in period is required. There's also no universally agreed upon period for break-in, and it could be dependent on manufacturer/model. However, even those who do believe in a break-in period expect the speaker to sound very good from the beginning and without distortion.

In otherwords the break-in period simply sweetens the sound of an otherwise great sounding speaker, it does not correct any flaws.

Btw, could it be that what you're hearing is panel rattle? Any decent speaker that puts out some bass can rattle your door in ways you never imagined. Damping the door with Dynomat or Brown Bread might be a good idea.
